Just searched on where Peleg Slocum, who got Cuttyhunk in 1693, and whose descendants continued to have it through the mid 1800s, is buried, - 

"Peleg Slocum acquired Cuttyhunk Island in 1693, and his family maintained ownership of it, along with the surrounding islands of Nashawena and Penikese, well into the mid-1800s. This period of Slocum family ownership on Cuttyhunk lasted for approximately 165 years. Peleg Slocum, a Quaker, used the island primarily for grazing sheep - ..."

and found that it's nearby in the Apponagansett Friends Cemetery in Dartmouth (also called Assonet or Freetown, I see) -

Could that ginormous barge, behind the Cuttyhunk ferry on Cuttyhunk, that I saw delivering 4 oil trucks this morning to Cuttyhunk around 7:30 am and with the name Packer on their sides, and Alan Wilder knows the owner Packer the owner .... have brainstorming-wise been protecting us even from hypothetical underwater guided missiles by foreign uniformed armed services - and as a whistleblower in the SF Bay Area and on Cuttyhunk ??? ...

I thought humorously of asking someone humorously or tongue in cheek, at the Smith Neck Quaker Meeting if I happened to have met someone if they know of old Peleg Slocum, but didn't meet anyone ... 

There's a LOT of Quaker history in this area interestingly ... 

Annie and Cathy, how is Sandy B? Is he in hospice in Pendleton, and with lung cancer? What's his prognosis? And might you take a trip to Stanford Medicine / Hospital for 2nd and 3rd opinions about a lung cancer diagnosis, and arthritic hip diagnosis too? Might you come into communication with Dr Jeffrey Velotta MD, thoracic surgeon, at Kaiser Permanente Oakland in these regards too?

former native tree species on the Elizabeth islands Massachusetts Nashawena Penikese Cuttyhunk islands 


In their pre-settlement forested state, the Elizabeth Islands (including Penikese and Nashawena) were home to a variety of native tree species. While some species common on nearby islands are currently missing on Penikese, it's possible that, in the absence of further disturbance, it could return to a state forested with red cedar (Juniperus virginiana), as described in a presettlement account from 1602. 
Additional native tree species likely present in the historical forests of the Elizabeth Islands include:
  • Beech (Fagus grandifolia)
  • Oak (Quercus spp.)
  • Black Tupelo (Nyssa sylvatica)
  • Pitch Pine (Pinus rigida)
  • White Pine (Pinus strobus)
  • American Holly (Ilex opaca) 
It is important to note that many of these islands, particularly Penikese, have experienced significant changes in land use over time, including farming and grazing, which led to the loss of much of their original forest cover. Efforts are now being made to manage the vegetation on some islands, such as Penikese, to restore habitats for nesting birds.
