Stanford Hoover - "Stephen Kotkin: China, Russia, and American Freedom"

- question of whether China and Russia are primed for revolutions

Bill,

Stephen Kotkin: China, Russia, And American Freedom | Hoover Virtual Policy Briefing

It's fascinating - and regarding a question of whether China and Russia are primed for revolutions, and re value of a cold war (relative to real wars). And what's a new kind of 'cold war' in the information age, I wonder?

Hi Bill,

I added 2 recent articles I mentioned re information age 'cold war' questions here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/07/saffron-stanford-hoover-stephen-kotkin.html (1 re Swiss Le Temps' and Huawei in French, and the other 2 re India The Hindustan Times and TikTok and many more) - to this blog post with Stephen Kotkin's and Liz Economy's Stanford talks, and much more.

Cheers, Scott

Bill,

I think win-win thinking in the long run marathon - for China-America socioeconomic connectedness in an IT world - could best benefit such 'hot peaces' (nee cold wars!) and regarding Michael McFaul's book too FROM COLD WAR TO HOT PEACE: A U.S. Ambassador in Putin's Russia.
https://twitter.com/McFaul/status/1205738583249715203?s=20. Am hoping great numbers of our best scholars and thinkers get this right. Stanford Law's China Guiding Cases' Project could help enormously in such peace and prosperity thinking. :)

Cheers,
Scott

Bill,

Here's Liz Economy, another China specialist, with I think a Quaker background; she went to Swarthmore College, and is also now on its Board.

- also fascinating, like Kotkin's interview.

Post coronavirus pandemic, in all ~200 countries, is CA more prepared now for:

epidemic (genetic)
nuclear accident
war
drought
global warming / oceans' rising +
5 years of other emergency situations for 40 million people?

and regarding these 5 hypothetical news' items -
- with more hypothetical news' items to come ...

Who knows?

Bill,

Nice to talk with you yesterday.

... like an earthquake (or fires) too - which could conceivably involve 5 years of other emergency supplies for 40 million people?

Is California preparing, do you think -
"Rapid response capabilities needed: molecular diagnostics, vaccines, neutralizing antibodies, and homes easily converted to off-the-grid full-recycling quarantine-biospheres. Not just for this epidemic, but the next one " ? :)

Bill,

"off-the-grid full-recycling quarantine-biospheres" ...

For the next epidemic, if not this one, as George says ...

Bill,

If you might be interested, here's an email just now from the Stanford Law China Guiding Cases' Project ... In a time of legal reform in China, is the Beijing Supreme Court (since only 2011, I think) transformed because of this Stanford Law CGCP? Is rule of law coming to play a much more significant role in China than before, and in conversation with Stanford Law, and in Mandarin and in English?

Dear Abbas,

Could you please share this with Ms. Kar ? And Mehrangiz and Shahrzad, may I e-introduce you here? Shahrzad has recently completed her Ph.D. at UC Berkeley, where I know her from (I attended her Master's Degree graduation ceremony), and is originally from Tehran. (Shahrzad, were you able to hear and see this great Stanford talk?) Thank you so much for your excellent talk, Ms. Kar.

My questions from your talk: "Thank you, Mehrangiz Kar, for your excellent thinking about the Iranian women’s movement. What roles ahead regarding women’s equality in Iran, and the significance of the Farsi LANGUAGE & discourse in particular, do you see as strategically important? (I ask this having written my Reed College undergraduate thesis on the 1983 book “SEXISM AND GOD TALK: TOWARD A FEMINIST THEOLOGY” by Rosemary Ruether - http://web2.uwindsor.ca/courses/classical/king/Sexism-and-God-Talk.htm & https://peped.org/philosophicalinvestigations/summary-sexism-god-talk-ruether/ which highlights a critique of imagery and language in changing patriarchy in religion and culture). How could California’s culture, language and laws in the 2020s regarding women’s equality come into conversation with Iran’s and your thinking in these regards, and re on-the-ground social structures/processes/institutions? Thank you, and regards, Scott (sgkmacleod@worlduniversityandschool.org)

As a follow up, in what ways do you see the internet opening new opportunities for the women’s movement in Iran? Thank you."

Thank you, especially, for your fascinating concluding thoughts. How might some of this emerge on the internet even (which I am exploring and teaching about in a related vein - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/InfoTechNetworkSocGlobalUniv.html).

Here, by the way, are the beginnings of Iran World University and School, and in the Persian language:
https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Persian_language (planned in Farsi)
https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Iran_(Islamic_Republic_of)
World Univ & Sch seeks to offer online degrees in Farsi based on https://ocw.mit.edu/ - Bachelor, Ph.D., Law, M.D. and I.B. high school, in particular.

And here are some related wiki subjects regarding your talk, also planned in Farsi -
https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Human_Rights

How might we communicate further about Iran World University and School in Farsi? This autumn WUaS is seeking to matriculate our 2nd undergraduate class in English, potentially taking edX courses, with students studying from all ~200 countries in the world. If you know of English-speaking Iranian students in Iran or elsewhere who might be interested in free-to-students' online Bachelors' degrees, please let me know.

Thank you.

Best regards,
Scott

"What Do Players of Video Games Experience When Enacting Virtual Violence?" video - and regarding the anthropology of emotions, and even for further research into different emotions in the making of virtual Harbin Hot Springs for ethnographic research, and ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy

Dear Christoph, and Sharon,

Just shared this with you, Christoph, in Academia.edu:
"Thanks for your interesting thinking about virtual violence in video games. What sparked my interest in particular was this:
"What Do Players of Video Games Experience When Enacting Virtual Violence?" video -
https://lt.org/publication/what-do-players-video-games-experience-when-enacting-virtual-violence .

I haven't been able to see a bibliography of this "Gewalt im Computerspiel ..." paper yet regarding whether you cite Tom Boellstorff's "Coming of Age in Second Life" - since he may have spent as much time in SL doing participant observation, as you did with your video games' research. My book "Naked Harbin Ethnography" seeks to explore ethnographically questions of actual-virtual emotion in a related way, as does seeking to facilitate creation of a realistic virtual Harbin Hot Springs for actual-virtual ethnographic research and comparison, and a related realistic virtual earth (as well as a new social science method I'm calling ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy). How might we best communicate further about your work, your upcoming project in your video and all of this? Will email you as well."

In downloading, your "Gewalt_im_Computerspiel._Facetten_eines.pdf" (und Ich kann auch Deutsch sprechen und lesen), I don't see a bibliography, however.

I've been active in the Tourism Studies' Working Group at UC Berkeley in many of these regards, and with respect to your interests in heritage and museums as well - http://tourismstudies.org/People.htm#SM . Here's a fairly recent talk there - "Harbin & Avatar Bots: Robotics & Tourism" - on my actual-virtual field site, Harbin Hot Springs in northern California (have either of you ever visited Harbin?) -

Am also interested in facilitating the creation of a single realistic virtual earth for everything (think Google Street View with TIME SLIDER / Maps / Earth with TensorFlow and Translate, and with Second Life re group build-ability and avatar bots, but realistic ones, - like Samsung "Neons" or 'artificial humans' ), and especially in facilitating the development of ALL museums ever as virtual museums - ALL over ALL time in ALL languages virtually and realistically (https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Museums and https://twitter.com/hashtag/RealisticVirtualEarthForMuseums?src=hashtag_click ).  And, Sharon, here's an Oxford related 'brainstorming' blog post - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/10/caribbean-reef-squid-art-into-robots-as.html.

Sharon, - interesting Isle of Skye and Gaelic revival ethnological focus too! - http://www.carmah.berlin/people/macdonald-sharon/. World Univ & Sch seeks to be in A) all 7,117 languages and B) in all 200 countries - as major online A) wiki schools, and B) online universities emerging from best STEM CC-4 OpenCourseWare in its 4 languages for free-to-students' online university and high school degrees.

I wrote an University of Edinburgh Celtic & Scottish Studies M.Sc. paper on visiting virtual St. Kilda regarding 2 networks (UNESCO WHS and internet), and as a nascent virtual place in 2004, which paper is also in Academia.edu - https://www.academia.edu/1243940/Physical_and_Online_St._Kilda_A_Comparison_of_Senses_of_Place (but which doesn't seem to be there any more, so you'll find it here - http://scottmacleod.com/MacLeod%20Physical%20and%20Online%20St%20Kilda%20A%20%20Comparison%20of%20Senses%20of%20Place%20MSc%20Dissertation%20University%20of%20Edinburgh.pdf). Are you a Scot, by any chance? I've studied in Edinburgh for 2 separate years (at Fettes College in 1977-78, and at the Univ. of Edinburgh in 2003-04), and have studied too at the University of Munich (LMU) in 1981-82, through a Reed College program in Munich.

Again, Christoph and Sharon, how might we best communicate further about your work, your upcoming project in your video and all of this? And in what ways might we even explore collaborating in the development of a realistic virtual earth and realistic virtual Harbin, and especially regarding emotions ethnographically? I appreciate in many ways the thinking (ethnographically especially) in your video, Christoph.

Best regards, Scott
