Reed Board Nomination Form ...

Reed Alumni Board Nomination Form

Please fill in the form to nominate someone, or yourself, to serve on the Alumni Board of Directors for terms that commence July 1, 2024.

**Please only submit one form per nominee. If you are nominating multiple people, a separate form will need to be submitted for each of them.** This nomination form take less than 10 minutes to complete. All submissions must be received by Saturday, July 15, 2023.

As described in the Alumni Board Guidebook:

At-large member (3-year term):  There are five new at-large members of the alumni board selected by nominating committee annually. Principal duties of at-large members include attending (in person or by phone) five board meetings annually and participating meaningfully on a standing committee or task force. Although not a requirement, many new at-large members have at least some previous volunteer experience with Reed.

Secretary (4-year term): Executive Committee (EC) members are the board officers, and normally serve on the EC for four years beginning as secretary and advancing through positions of increased responsibility. One or more of these years may be concurrent with a portion of the at-large term. Typically, current or past members of the alumni board are invited by the EC to consider nomination as secretary during the call for nominations period in the spring; however, self-nominations and nominations by others are also encouraged. In consecutive years, the secretary moves into the positions of vice president, president and immediate past president, and the individuals in these positions progress accordingly.

Alumni Trustee (4-year term): There are four members of the Reed Board of Trustees that are nominated by the alumni board as Alumni Trustees (one new member each year). Alumni trustees report to the alumni board on the affairs of the college and report back to the trustees on initiatives and concerns of the alumni board. Alumni trustees can be selected from the alumni association as a whole, but are generally alumni who have provided volunteer support to the College, including the alumni board. It is important that the alumni trustee be an effective communicator and collaborator, who is willing to assume trusteeship including financial support (any amount of financial support is sufficient for trusteeship) and other duties of a Reed Trustee, and also understands and is able to represent the Alumni Association. Please see the Constitution of the Reed College Alumni Association Article V for more information about alumni trustees.

Nominating Committee Member (1-year term): The Nominating Committee (NC) selects the slate of new at-large board members, secretary, and alumni trustee to be presented to the Alumni Association for the following year. Committee members are the immediate past president of the alumni board (chair), the current president, and three non-members of the Alumni Board. Please see the Constitution of the Reed College Alumni Association Article VII in the appendix for more information.

Thank you for your submission and taking the time to tell us more about the nominee!

Submissions will be reviewed by the nominating committee and the candidates that best fill the current needs of the board will be asked to serve.   Your endorsement is encouraged and an important part in the evaluation process.

The nominating committee strives for demographic balance on the Alumni Board, including class year, gender, ethnicity, major, geographic location, etc.

My Grandpa Sandy Brown (Alexander Chadbourne Brown - ACB) - some first memories in WikiTree genealogy software

Grandpa Sandy Brown (in a MIT yearbook from the early 1920s)

Ma (Janie Kirkbride Brown MacLeod),

Memory 2 which I've added to WikiTree for Grandpa (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Brown-92991), and having edited this a bit -

My grandpa Sandy Brown (ACB) - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Brown-92991 - of Cincinnati, Ohio, for most of his life, went to Boarding School in 10th grade probably, at Phillips Academy Exeter in New Hampshire, from around 1917 or '18 until ~1920, having gone to elementary school (probably 1st-8th or 9th grades?) in Vinton, Iowa. Born on 18 Apr 1903 in Boulder Colorado, and after graduating from Exeter, and getting into MIT, he spent a kind of 'gap year' (because he wasn't ready for MIT, I learned from my mother Janie Kirkbride Brown MacLeod on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28, 2023), in Berlin, Germany - 1920-1921? - studying classical piano, German, and possibly other subjects, possibly studying at a Technische Hochschule, I have a vague recollection, (in the part of Berlin, Germany, which became East Germany after WWII, in 1949, I gleaned from my mother on 5/28/23 too). He was an excellent classical pianist. He (Alexander Chadbourne Brown - aka Sandy Brown) returned to begin studying for an undergraduate degree at MIT in Cambridge, MA, in around 1921, and possibly majoring in chemical engineering, or similar, and also went to MIT after his Bachelor of Science degree?, for a second degree for a year, which was like a Master's degree but wasn't called this.

My grandmother, Rachel Gilbert Brown (b. 12 Mar 1905) - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Gilbert-11800 - was also born in Boulder Colorado, where she was raised, and as a Baptist (I learned again on May 28 2023), and went to the University of Colorado, Boulder, for her undergraduate degree, then headed west to Pomona College in California, where she may have studied classical piano (and she was also a gifted pianist I have heard), possibly for a Master's degree, and then went to Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio, for (another?) Master's degree in social work. (My mother Janet KB MacLeod also got a Master's degree in Social Work in Pittsburgh, PA). I think my grandmother and grandfather knew each other from Boulder, Colorado, although my grandfather, Sandy Brown, was adopted when he was around 6 years old by Theodore Lincoln and his wife Virginia of Vinton, Iowa, after his ACB's mother died after giving birth to his youngest sister, Martha Holway "Aunt Marf" Briscoe formerly Brown aka Higley, so my Grandpa Sandy Brown would have left Boulder at a fairly young age. (Just found this resource about my grandmother Granny Brown, ACB's wife from 1932-1985? or 1987, when he died, in the Boulder Historical Society - https://localhistory.boulderlibrary.org/islandora/object/islandora%3A57110). Grandpa Sandy Brown called my grandmother Ray, I recall.

My grandfather, Sandy Brown, may have spent some months doing research or studying in Pittsburgh in the late 1920s (?) at Carnegie Tech or the Carnegie Institute, after his studies at MIT. (I have a recollection of visiting the Carnegie Institute building near where he may have been an academic researcher, with my grandfather (ACB), grandmother (RGB), and my father (GKM MD) and mother (JKBM), possibly in the first half of the 1980s (or late 1970s), near the corner of Fifth Avenue and S Bellefield Ave, in Pittsburgh, PA now 15213, after many buildings there had changed and much had been built since around the mid-late 1920s - and recall that Grandpa Sandy Brown didn't recognize the 1970s' or 1980s' Carnegie buildings regarding his time there many decades before).

My grandfather I think took a chemical engineering position in Cincinnati, Ohio, before becoming a chemical engineer at Emory Industries there, where he spent much of his career. In the 2nd half of the 1920s, he would visit my grandmother in Cleveland, Ohio, and she would visit him in Cincinnati, before they got married near Cincinnati Ohio on 13 Feb 1932 in Augusta, Kentucky, by a Justice of the Peace (my mother said on Monday, May 28, 2023). Ted Brown (Theodore Chadbourne Brown), their first child, was born in 1933, and my mother, Janie MacLeod, was born in 1935. A birthright Unitarian, Sandy Brown, my grandfather (ACB) and grandmother (RGB) were very involved in the Unitarian Church community in Cincinnati Ohio for much of their married life, after my grandmother had explored becoming part of the Episcopal church in Cincinnati. My mother, Janie MacLeod, said too on 5/28/23 that they would have become involved in the Unitarian Church in Cincinnati when she was around 12 or 13, and born in 1935, grandpa Sandy Brown's family could have become active in this church around 1947 or so. Alexander Chadbourne Brown's roots in Unitarianism date from his Chadbourne and Holway ancestors, and when his ancestors were in Machias, Maine.

What have I left out from what we talked about? What would you add?

Thoughts, questions, suggestions, new memories in these regards?

Love, Scott

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Brown-92991

I knew my grandfather Sandy Brown (Alexander Chadbourne Brown) from just after I was born on 31 December 1960 until he died in ~1987 (1985?). My mother, Janie MacLeod, brother, Sandy MacLeod (b. 5 Oct 1964), and I would visit Granny and Grandpa in Cincinnati, Ohio, from the early 1960s through the mid-1970s many years in the spring, flying there, first I think from Boston, Massachusetts (Lexington, MA, then from Cambridge, MA, then Boston), until around 1966, then from New Haven, Connecticut (Hamden, CT), until about 1971, then from Washington DC (Bethesda, MD) until about 1974, then from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, until the second half of the 1970s. My grandfather, Sandy Brown, was a chemical engineer at Emory Industries in Cincinnati, OH,  for much of his career, with around 9 patents to his name, in 'fatty acids.'  He was born in Boulder, Colorado, spent some of his elementary school years in Vinton, Iowa, after his mother died in Boulder, Colorado, after childbirth in having my great "Aunt Marf," Martha Brown Briscoe, his youngest sister, when Sandy Brown was around 6 years old. Grandpa Sandy Brown went to Phillips Academy Exeter in New Hampshire for at least high school, then to MIT for 2 degrees, spending some time studying in Germany, and then studied I think at Carnegie Tech or the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh, PA (having some Scottish ancestry, I think - and possibly significantly). He played classical piano beautifully. He and my Granny Brown were members of the Unitarian Church in Cincinnati, Ohio, for around 40s years. I recall visiting Grandpa and Granny in their house on Belmont avenue, in Cincinnati, OH, and then in their house on Fairview avenue also in Cincinnati. Both houses had a piano, oriental rugs, and were comfortable and lovely and homey in many ways. My grandfather was an engineer, a chemical engineer, and very knowledgeable about chemistry, geology, and many other sciences (which he had studied at MIT and Exeter, I think), and classical music. He also raised bees, was a gardener, and the Browns had a goat named Nancy Clancy on Belmont avenue. He was a quiet and thoughtful man, and particularly in relation to my talkative grandmother, his wife, whom I have called an 'oral historian' because of her nonstop talking. My grandfather, Sandy Brown, visited the MacLeods in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a number of times, after the 4 of us (the MacLeod family) moved to Pittsburgh in 1974, from the Washington DC area (from Bethesda, Maryland, on West Parkhill Drive near the National Institute of Health - NIH), and my father, GKM MD, became a professor of Public Health at the University of Pittsburgh, as well as taught 'Grand Rounds' in Pitt's medical school. Grandpa Sandy was very forbearing (politely or patiently restrained in an impulse to do something), possibly regarding my grandmother's loquaciousness. Both Granny and Grandpa were born in originally from Boulder, Colorado, so in a sense they were US westerners, before my grandfather spent time growing up in NE Iowa, probably from around 1905 to the mid-1910s, before he went to New England, and first to Boarding School at Phillips Academy Exeter in NH in the 1910s, and then to Cambridge, MA, at MIT around 1920, and studied there in the early 1920s. With my grandfather's tweed jackets, and his gray pants, and white shirts, with a slide ruler in his pocket (which I inherited) - chemical engineering clothes -  (and my father's GKM MD's tweed jackets, and suit coats), both my grandfather ACB and father GKM MD wore kind of New England academic and intellectual clothes. I recall going out in the early early morning or similar to see eclipses with my grandfather and family, cutting a hole in a box to see the image of the eclipse in the back of the box, so as not to look at the sun, in order to not hurt the eyes. I recall also going to the 'half dome' architectural feature in the Pittsburgh train station and exploring its interesting acoustic and sound transmitting and focalizing properties. I recall going to see state parks with Indian mounds in Ohio and similar, and to learn about their Indian cultures archaeologically. I recall going on many many museum visits in Cincinnati, and to the Museum of Natural History and Art museums there with my grandfather (and grandmother). My grandfather was a scientific knowledge-oriented thinker, a MIT engineer, and knew the 'hard sciences' - and chemistry and 'fatty acids' for example - from a 1920s' MIT perspective, and developed this knowledge in his career as, I think, the main engineer at Emory Industries in Cincinnati, OH, for much of his adult life. (Brainstorming-wise, in what ways will we be able to bring back Grandpa Sandy Brown as a virtual avatar bot with artificial intelligence and machine learning and to be able to talk with him in the future, and for genealogical questions and conversation (e.g. with artificial intelligence AI and natural language processing NLP) too? Am exploring related questions further in my blog - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/SGKMacLeod%20family%20history and https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/avatar%20agency) - Scott GK MacLeod (W, May 24, 2023 - http://scottmacleod.com/family.htm - http://scottmacleod.com/ScottMacLeodFamilyHistory.htm)
