I want to invite you all to our second annual Hack for Social Impact, taking place on November 8–9 in San Francisco. Luma Link for Registration.
This hackathon connects technologists with nonprofits, NGOs, and civic organizations such as Project Homeless Connect, the California Youth Homeless Project, Point Blue Conservation Science, The Innocence Center, Mission Local, and more. Our goal is to foster lasting impact by encouraging teams to continue developing their projects beyond the event.
Last year’s hackathon was held in partnership with the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in San Francisco. One of the winning teams presented their solution at COP26 in Saudi Arabia (the UNCCD’s decision-making conference), while another secured investment from Y Combinator.

After talking with you re the Cromarty dialect in Scotland, and WUAS seeking to create wiki schools in all 7159 known living languages (mutual intelligibility is one definition of language) per the Ethnologue, and extinct languages too ... I wanted to learn a little further about the Cromarty dialect and what makes it distinct
Found -
The Cromarty dialect, a dialect of North Northern Scots spoken in Cromarty, Scotland, is now extinct after the death of its last native speaker, Bobby Hogg, in 2012. The dialect was unique for its specialized nautical vocabulary, the use of archaic "thee" and "thou," and an aspirate "h" that could be added or dropped in certain words.
- Extinction: The last native speaker, Bobby Hogg, died on October 2, 2012, leading to the dialect's extinction.
- Linguistic classification: It was a dialect of Modern Scots, specifically belonging to the North Northern Scots branch.
- Origin: It is thought to have developed from the language of fishing families who moved north in the 15th and 16th centuries, possibly with influences from a fusion with English from visiting soldiers.
- Key features:
- Nautical terminology: The dialect was heavily specialized for talking about fishing techniques and equipment.
- Archaic forms: It used archaic pronouns like "thee" and "thou," which were still in common use in the first half of the 20th century.
- Aspirate "h": It featured an "h" being either added or subtracted from words. For example, "ear" could become "hear" and "herring" could become "erring".

This hackathon connects technologists with nonprofits, NGOs, and civic organizations such as Project Homeless Connect, the California Youth Homeless Project, Point Blue Conservation Science, The Innocence Center, Mission Local, and more. Our goal is to foster lasting impact by encouraging teams to continue developing their projects beyond the event.
Last year’s hackathon was held in partnership with the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in San Francisco. One of the winning teams presented their solution at COP26 in Saudi Arabia (the UNCCD’s decision-making conference), while another secured investment from Y Combinator.
This year, we’re proud to have sponsorship from leading technology companies including Eudia, Google, Bild AI (YC W25, last year’s winner), and ElevenLabs.
