The American confrontation with China is not a thunderstorm that will quickly go away if Trump is voted out of office. This forces Europe to rethink and the West as a whole to adopt new strategies.

Dhe US is currently being hit by a new wave of corona infections, Florida, Arizona, South Carolina and Alabama have the highest rates of infection. Which promptly led to a simple explanatory pattern on the political stage: The second wave raged worst in Republican states because they were the most willing to respond to Donald Trump's demand to quickly reopen the economy and public life. The explanation has only a few blemishes: Even in democratically governed California, the infection numbers are exploding.

So what went wrong in California? What warnings does the popular state have for Germany and other European states that fear a second wave?

EU political star Margrethe Vestager fails for the second time to force tax payments from large corporations. The struggle against the market power of the tech giants must continue. But she should resist temptation.

This ruling is a resounding slap in the face for EU competition commissioner Margrethe Vestager: the second highest court in the Union has ruled that Apple does not have to make an additional tax payment of 14.3 billion euros in Ireland. The judges canceled a corresponding request by Vestager.

The EU is fighting tax competition and should know better
The EU Commission simply does not seem to be able to put up with the fact that the Member States structure their tax systems as they see fit. On the same day that the Commissioner for Competition suffered a bitter defeat before the EU court, Brussels already presented the next ideas against tax competition.

What I've been watching

Over the past week, I have watched the six-part HBO miniseries The Plot Against America, which came out in March. It is based on the 2004 Philip Roth novel of the same title and tells an alternative history in which FDR is defeated in 1940 by the fascist-sympathizing Charles Lindbergh through the eyes of a Jewish family living in Newark, NJ. Compelling story, well acted. It is the best piece of television I have seen in years.
