Hi Symonkeo And Professor Aiwha Ong, (and Profs. Graburn, MacCannells, Nader, Michalak, Rabinow, Scheper-Hughes, Briggs),

I'd like to introduce you, Aiwha, here to Symonkeo SENSATHITH THOMAS. Symonkeo just gave an excellent ethnographic talk in the UC Berkeley Anthropology department's Gifford room on Friday:

An Ethnographic Study on Tourism and Heritage Value in Luang Prabang, Lao PDR

Here's the beginning of Lao World University and School -
https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Laos_(Lao_People%27s_Democratic_Republic) - eventually with CC-4 MIT OCW in Laotian. I've inquired with Symonkeo if she would teach an Ethnography of Tourism course online here in Laotian, but WUaS isn't that far along yet.  (And here's a related blog post about WUaS planning for the IB high school diploma, which World Univ & Sch seeks to develop in Laotian with time- https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/11/wattles-acacia-spp-ib-school-in-modesto.html). And here's some related information about the Stanford Law China Guiding Cases Project - https://international.stanford.edu/info/news/china-guiding-cases-project-stanford-law-school and https://cgc-store.law.stanford.edu/pages/about . WUaS may seek to create something parallel with Laos - and create an online Malaysia Law School at WUaS as well. And here's the beginning China Law School at World University and School: https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/China_Law_School_at_WUaS (accessible from - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Law_School by way of comparison, not yet in Chinese. Shall we create Malaysia and Laos World University and School, and beginning with https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/

Unfortunately, Aiwha, the MIT OCW-centric wiki Malaysia World University and School in Malaysian -
https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Malaysia (planned in Malaysian languages) - isn't that far along yet (like Laos World University and School, planned online in Laotian). WUaS is planning online Bachelor, Ph.D., law and medicine (MD) degrees in Malaysian, and beginning with licensing with CA's BPPE for Bachelor and Ph.D. degrees in English.

I've blogged about Symonkeo's talk here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/11/drooping-she-oak-allocasuarina.html . And WUaS also seeks to create a realistic virtual Laos (think Google Street View with time slider with avatar bots + much more) for actual-virtual ethnographic research - and with regard to my actual-virtual Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic project ~ http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg - where this is the beginnings of a realistic virtual Harbin Hot Springs (think again Google Street View with time slider +) accessible from ~ https://twitter.com/HarbinBook ~ http://bit.ly/HarbinBook . With regards to all of this, WUaS is seeking to facilitate developing a realistic virtual earth for everything - and with regards to a new social science method and theory I'm developing and calling ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy.

I was a reader, Aiwha, in your course "Globalization and Gender" in the year 2000, as well as in Professor Graburn's "Tourism, Art and Modernity" course at the time, and was a student of Professor Nader, and Professor Brigg + http://scottmacleod.com/papers.htm. When talking about my planned ethnographic project in 2000, Aiwha, I remember you mentioning something like "Harbin is that nudey place, isn't it." (My first actual-virtual Harbin ethnographic book "Naked Harbin Ethnography: Hippies, Warm Pools, Counterculture, Clothing-Optionality & Virtual Harbin" and all my books so far are Harbin Hot Springs-informed).

Thank you again for your very edifying talk, Symonekeo. Aiwha, if there happens to be a video of Symonkeo's Gifford room presentation, it's worth viewing.

Sincerely, Scott

The Tourism Studies Working Group
is pleased to announce

An Ethnographic Study on Tourism and Heritage Value in Luang Prabang, Lao PDR

Symonekeo SENSATHITH THOMAS (Ph.D)

Former student at Rikkyo University
Former Lecturer at National University of Laos

Friday, 8 November 2019, 5:00 PM  - 7:00 PM
Gifford Room, 221 Kroeber Hall
University of California, Berkeley

This research identifies the relationship between heritage and tourism based on an ethnographic study in the town of Luang Prabang in the Southeast Asia country of Lao PDR. This relationship refers to the emotional affinity derived from the cultural artifacts within the context of their traditional culture and religious practices. The main part of this research discusses tourist impressions of Buddhist religion, experienced by tourists in Luang Prabang town. In addition, this research attempts to provide a new perspective on interaction between tourists, local residents and local culture to create a 'heritage value', a new term in the field of cultural heritage tourism. This research shows how 'heritage value' contributes to the local economy by attracting tourist revenues that then sustain the local culture itself, resulting in both tourism development and heritage preservation. This research depicts the local life styles and how they utilize traditional houses, local architectures and handicrafts from variety of ethnic groups to create 'heritage value'.

Dr. Symonekeo Sensathith Thomas recently relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area from the People's Democratic Republic of Lao (Laos) where she served for 14 years on the faculty of social sciences of the National University of Lao as both a lecturer in the subjects of cultural tourism and international relations and as the deputy head of the research division. In 2014 she was a visiting professor at Mahidol University, Thailand, and Sejong University, South Korea. In addition to teaching, Dr. Symonekeo frequently presents papers in international conferences on World Heritage cultural sites and trains and consults for international organization including the World Bank, UNESCO and international non-governmental organizations.

Dr. Symonekeo holds a Ph.D.in Cultural Heritage Tourism from Rikkyo University, Japan (2010-2013) where her dissertation topic was: "Ethnographic Study of Heritage and Tourism in Luang Prabang, Laos". She also received a Master of Arts degree in International Relations from Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto, Japan (2007-2009) and a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations, the Institute for International Relation of Vietnam (1999-2003), specialized in the field of international economics.

Hi Symonkeo, Juliet, Greg and All, (Symonkeo, can you please forward this too to Greg?),

Thanks again for your excellent and far-reaching talk on Lao 'heritage value' re the ethnography of tourism there:

An Ethnographic Study on Tourism and Heritage Value in Luang Prabang, Lao PDR

Juliet, which Wilden book title about the Belgium psychoanalyst, Jacques Lacan MD, did you mention again -
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_Wilden? Here's the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy's entry on Lacan - https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/lacan/

Symonkeo, does any form of psychoanalysis, or psychoanalytic MD psychiatry, exist in Lao that you know of - and in the Laotian language? It can be a boon in times of rapid modernization.

Greg, here's some information about the Stanford Law China Guiding Cases Project - https://international.stanford.edu/info/news/china-guiding-cases-project-stanford-law-school and https://cgc-store.law.stanford.edu/pages/about. And here's the beginning China Law School at World University and School ... China Law School at WUaS: https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/China_Law_School_at_WUaS (accessible from - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Law_School). Shall we create something similar for Laos World University and School, and beginning too with https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/

And Greg, what's your email address/LinkedIn (my LI is https://www.linkedin.com/in/scottgkmacleod/)?

Thanks again, Symonekeo, for your edifying Lao ethnographic 'heritage value' talk!

Best,
Scott

PS
I find Lacan's public demonstration of psychoanalysis with a young French hippy (I'll call him) in 1971 fascinating and edifying:

As part of the planned online WUaS medical schools, WUaS is planning to create online psychiatry and psychoanalytic schools -
- perhaps developing a new school of Psychoanalysis and potentially in many of Wikipedia's ~300 languages, and with avatar bots eventually even.

Hi Symonekeo, Dean and All,

Thanks again. And I regret to inform you that the Academic Press at WUaS - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/AcademicPress.html - https://twitter.com/WUaSPress - planned with machine learning for academic translation from each of all 7111 known living languages is not readily available yet for translating, Dean, your book "The Tourist: A New Theory of the Leisure Class" (1976), - but which I hope we'll be able to translate into Laotian soon-ish!

Here's a related big-idea Tweet -
