Hi Ed,

At the close of getting together on Thursday, you mentioned something about a 'real identity crisis' - and with regards to getting a Real ID in California, which Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) pictures you shared with me, just as I was landing in Oakland on 2 Jan 2020. How's your identity crisis going? :) Did you get your CA REAL ID in the mail yet? Are you real?

Am reminded in these regards of Angela and Victor's 'Who Are We Anyway?' web page - https://angela-victor.com/content/who-are-we-anyway - and Yogini Angela's poem or teaching therein - "Who Are We: Angela?" https://angela-victor.com/angela-farmer - which also seems identity related ... (and hand written, but then digitally put on this web page). Here's Angela's poem:

Who am I
whispered the wind
as it blew through my hair?

Who am I
sang the sea
as a wave like a snake
curled over the beach

This is I
croaked the rock
but I'll be gone by tomorrow

And the sun grew hotter
as I tumbled through my breath
and fell
into darkness, into nothing . . .
into space
is this who I am?

A new breath began

(image of beach, rock and sun)

For me Yoga is a journey each day
down into my underworld
not knowing
what I shall find . . . . .

It is a 'kind of death'
to meet those places in my body
that still feel pain
that still hold fear
from long forgotten times . . .

Then with quiet and gentle acceptance of these
little parts of me, the sad or hidden parts,
the lonely or ugly parts . . .
seeds of release are planted
and the outcome is a gift
that inspires my teaching,
enriches my life (image).

I feel such joy when I see a student
finding courage to enter her or his own
inner-underworld in their own unique
way. They discover their own creativity in breath
and movement as deep places un-ravel
and the power and beauty that brings to them.

In this process, the terms "teacher' and
"student" dissolve and we enter an
awareness of
innocence and gratitude.

Appreciating here the hand written aspect of Angela's poem - https://angela-victor.com/angela-farmer - and appreciating too the invitation to head further into my own 'underworld' or 'Hades' herein, and wonder too about my identity as a Yoga teacher as well, inspired by Angela & Victor, but creative in its own way and re "Hippy-anjali Yoga Notations" ~
http://www.scottmacleod.com/yoganotations.html ... online as well.

How best to move this online, and beyond, for ex., the many Youtube videos of Angela and Victor?}

Am continuing to journal with pen on new paper, thanks to your great gift, Ed, of this beautiful new 'Marco Polo Journal' ... and in the process of which I'm learning ... re the digital especially, but also with regard to the creativity of hand-writing with pen, and drawing or creating art, too ... and perhaps a bit now in conversation with Angela's writings ...

Is, per Angela's invitation here in poem and in courses, going into one's own 'underworld' via the body (and Yoga movement) - inner body for her - a kind of therapy as well? (It echoes the explorations of one's own 'unconscious' via free association of psychotherapy and psychoanalysis - Je préfère Lacan - but includes for me the bodymind, and what I'll call 'inner releasing actions' re meditation too )

And Victor's "Who Are We: Victor?" is interesting and touching too ... and part of their Yoga marriage teachings as well. ...

. . .

So how's your identity crisis going, Ed? :) Did you get your CA REAL ID in the mail yet? Are you real?  I think my personal crisis of a few years' ago is past, thank goodness . . .

And on with identity questions here, re Yoga too, even as World Univ & Sch unfolds, like a flower. Is WUaS a kind of Yoga too, and part of my teaching in these regards, as well ... and identity-wise too? Am hoping I'll hear back from edX soon about collaboration inquiry I emailed about yesterday.  Thanks again for the 'The Journeys of Scott MacLeod in an Internet World,' my new, blank, hand-writable 'Marco Polo Journal,' a birthday gift from you :)

Fond regards, Scott

Hi Ed,

Thanks again for the brilliant blank 'Marco Polo Journal' ... appreciating the red and white wrapping paper much too ... I've written a number of pages in it already ... am calling it 'The Journeys of Scott MacLeod in an Internet World' ... where this is kind of private journal, in contrast to my blog (web log?) which is kind of public ... :) Who am I writing it for? Thought I might write it in the form of a journey like in Tolkien's Hobbit and Lord of the Rings ... and for my kids. Then looked up:

How is journaling therapeutic?
Journal therapy is a writing therapy focusing on the writer's internal experiences, thoughts and feelings. This kind of therapy uses reflective writing enabling the writer to gain mental and emotional clarity, validate experiences and come to a deeper understanding of him/herself.

Then looked up Quaker journaling (a centuries' old practice) and found (unexpectedly) - https://www.urmc.rochester.edu/encyclopedia/content.aspx?ContentID=4552&ContentTypeID=1

But "The Travels of Marco Polo" are neither really a journal - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Travels_of_Marco_Polo - https://www.khanacademy.org/partner-content/big-history-project/expansion-interconnection/exploration-interconnection/a/marco-polo - nor apparently the record of an Italian merchant seeking millions (also the name of his book, ... after his nick name "The Million", deriving from Polo's nickname "Emilione") in Asia ... ) ... some musings (and how to get these into the journal? - smartphone photography and then print and paste? or electronic circuit ink pen into Google Maps / Street View with Lego even in a #RealisticVirtualEarthForAnthropology  #RealisticVirtualEarthForLego #RealisticVirtualEarth somehow) ...

Re the Marco Polo map in the beginning of the blank journal, this just came through in email from Google Maps -

And a little easier to see ...

Could be the beginnings of creating a map of travels from Google Maps ... cool ...

AND,
here are the 2 MIT Tech Review articles I mentioned, in different form, and re thinking about cell phones in teens' lives ...

https://www.technologyreview.com/s/614934/teenagers-without-cell-phones

Am seeking to turn this too into a new form of the printing press - to print books on paper from Google Street View from GDocs in the SideBar, for example;
https://www.technologyreview.com/s/614669/googles-big-plan-to-fight-tech-addiction-a-piece-of-paper/

'To the Dance or the Pools? ~ Virtually! ... " may have arrived today at the Post Office ... when might be a good day for me to give it to you? This Thursday or Tuesday PM? Next weekend?

Fond regards, Scott

Ed,

And thanks especially for the spiral-bound 'Marco Polo Asia' journal (with pages from the Asia journal pasted into a blank journal) to write in - and come in conversation with especially. It opens a whole new great way to journal, and with my own pen (re my blog - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/writing?m=0) ... what a wonderful birthday gift. Thank you!

I've begun writing in it with your text message from yesterday:

"Can't talk now. Call me later?"

... will see what the first page from book or Polo's journal - is it "Il Millione" ... or  "The Travels of Marco Polo" ? - says ...

As he travels along the silk road ...

In images in Google search, looks like he's portrayed as a scholar and archer ... and Rustigielo wrote these travels it looks like too.

Have begun handwriting in it ... a new journey begins! :)

Fond regards,
Scott

Paper journal is begun and changing the way I think about writing things, journaling and generativity ... a good conversation ...

Ed,
what shall I call it, this new journal, as in the title of a book?
... 'The Journeys of Scott MacLeod in an Internet World' ...
Perhaps ...  :)

Thank you, Ed!

Hi Ed,

Thanks so much for the birthday celebration and the delicious Chocolate Pave cake! Nice to see you, especially!

Here's the Tweet (from MIT) about the teacher who asked his students to turn in their cell phones ...

This teacher asked his students to turn in their cell phones. After just two weeks, the majority began to think that their phones were limiting their relationships, compromising their own lives, and somehow cutting them off from the “real” world.
