[UUCPA Choir] singing together via. FM Radio

Unitarian Universalist

From Steve Johnson, who went to Haverford in the 1960s (Quaker college, and which was pretty radical then, I've heard, - and regarding envisioning & creating a better world), and grew up around Haverford before that, and sings in the UU Church of Palo Alto choir, now in a time of social isolation, due to Covid-19 quarantine, and where internet real-real time singing and music-making for community isn't yet viable:

Super, Steve and UUCPA!

Hooray for the 'Da Upper Yoopers' Barbershop Quartet & Chorus! :) only in Michigan and made only 'born in the USA' - https://www.latimes.com/world-nation/story/2020-12-30/coronavirus-choir-silence ... I guess the FM transmission band must be faster than former analog copper phone lines, which are/were certainly faster than internet TCP/IP packet switching ... Could we send internet signals over FM for singing? :) ... getting to real real time ...

"Every car has a radio, he reasoned. An FM transmitter broadcasting from the mixer could let each singer hear the choir and harmonize in real time." - https://www.latimes.com/world-nation/story/2020-12-30/coronavirus-choir-silence

I wanna go camping with a portable FM radio, - to sing! :)

Happy New Year, UU CPA,
Scott

Dear Steve, Linda, UUCPA, UUs,

So great - real real time music-making with a FM transistor, - for remote individuals. AM appreciating that both videos you shared, the LA Times' choir, and 'Da Upper Yoopers UU choir" could be very doable in the UUCPA parking lot in the back - and since cars are naturally self-quarantining, in the Covid-19 pandemic, and potentially good sound capsules.

Bruce, will you bring a podium out to the parking lot, in lovely winter-weather California SF Bay Area? :)

If really viable, it sounds like it could be something that Apple Inc., or MIT OCW-centric World Univ & Sch's Music Schools (in all 7117 known living languages, as wiki schools), or a Toyota, could come to produce as a product! And is such a FM transistor already built into some brands and models of cars, simply to be engaged with the know how? And it could certainly work for any instrument in a car, such as the Scottish Small Pipes in a van (https://scottmacleodhoneyinthebagscottishsmallpipesbagpiping.bandcamp.com/track/the-pumpkins-fancy-h-scott-gk-macleod), but not the Great Highland Bagpipes, for example. And in what ways are FM transistor set ups easily connected, or in, our smart phones already, or connectable to our laptops, I wonder (for possibly less good sound quality than a car?) ... and how to develop a FM transistor for choirs, with specific needs of choir singers in mind, and small musical instrument players too?

Am wondering too how all these digital technologies - like the Apple-Google tracing App on our smartphones - combined with electronic medical records after receiving a vaccine, if medically mandated, will change the dynamic of the the make ups of choirs, and churches, if some people might need to self-quarantine indefinitely; could this lead to further home singing, with excellent FM transistor add-ons, from car, home or smartphone? Please keep us posted!

Any thoughts about the UU Choir of Kensington / Berkeley in the east bay hills, and joining it virtually - with a FM transistor?

Here's an unfolding inquiry about transcendentalism writ personal - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/12/forest-park-portland-oregon-hiroshi.html - somehwhat informed by UU thinking since the first half of the 1800s; appreciating Paul Sawyer's thinking here too. :)

Musical cheers, & Non-theistically Quakerly / Friendly regards,
Scott

Ed Smyth MD and mental health

Ken Thompson MD & mental health

Thanks, Ed, so much for your New Year's and birthday call! (Am wondering if I should be concerned re NVG re your nausea/migraine thinking - but a nonissue since we aren't anywhere close to connecting, so am continuing to circulate). I'll seek some trails for Sunday! It was really nice to talk, and congratulations on your walk with Ellen and Bob! 🙂 (On with WUaS publishing, and piping, and World Univ & Sch!!) ... Desiderata revisiting ahead - https://www.desiderata.com/desiderata.html - and am remembering George A MD's observation, as a thinking language-oriented psychiatrist too - about hope in becoming more sophisticated. See you Sunday! And congratulations on your upcoming retirement! Happy New Year!

Why did Carter lose? Re our conversation, this adds bad economy, and gas lines in 1979 to the analysis https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1980_United_States_presidential_election - and this suggests Carter was too BOGSAT process oriented - www.brookings.edu/opinions/jimmy-carter-why-he-failed/amp/ ... Reagan put a gloss on everything in his TV image politics' symbolic communication making things seem easy to a big enough electorate, I seem to recall ... Further thoughts?

Wanna try Ed this 8.4 mile loop getting to the trail head at 11am - https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/muir-beach-to-tennessee-beach-loop?ref=result-card ... "Muir Beach to Tennessee Beach Loop is a 8.4 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Sausalito" ?
I'll be there. Boots and rain gear. And a hat. And sunscreen. And tick repellent. And water.
Great! ... I'll be wearing Birkenstocks (due to leg length difference) with extra thick socks compared with normal ... and with a packed lunch, and a back pack with some day-hike gear like yours! 🙂 Shall we picnic?

Appreciating your thinking and sophistication, Ed! In what ways might the Mcfarlanes have connections with VP elect Kamala Harris, I wonder ? I heard also friends Gantt - & Tym L ? - and Rob Byrne in your voice a bit. Am curious too about my level of cat 'allergies' in Canyon, where I've been quite independent from 'cats' in general. And Nicole? A house, a connection, communication, a family ... Good mental health together in Canyon (where my former landlord may both be mentally ill, in need of a MD psychiatrist?, and a criminal? even), or Cambridge MA, or elsewhere ... And regarding developing such sophisticated as well as psychiatric thinking at World Univ & Sch as well?
It's raining now, but not in the forecast that I saw .... Hope the weather is clear for hiking tomorrow!
Glad too I published my fifth book yesterday! 1/1/21 entitled "Light, Float, Sit, Watsu ~ Virtually: ..." ... It's a nice 🙂 one too :)
How to conceive of great mental health if we live to be 200 years of age, or older, I wonder - at age 100 & 175 etc? Thoughts?
What's orangutan mental health for humans, brainstorming-wise, in contrast to gorilla mental health or common chimp or Bonobo chimp mental health or lemur mental health or baboon mental health (200+ species of higher ape?) in a new conceiving, riffing and reframing-wise in language, of mental health re humans, of my own mental health .... Are OLD-FASHIONED or traditional nuclear families in the USA either gorilla or orangutan (relatively solitary individuals - until this might be dispelled as problematic primatology, like Fran's de Waal's hippy-chimp, very sexual in all pairings, peace love & happiness non-harming interpretations of Bonobo) in a sense - and in covid-19 pandemic times ...
USA. Further develop person centered recovery approach, build whole person primary health services, initiate public/population health capacity, grow needed work force, join rest of world. Big focus-social despair. Need to move beyond neoliberal society to solidarity society.
Am wondering where George Alexander MD would have headed thinking-wise (with the individual in particular) in some of these questions
And in my UC BERKELEY Anthropology talk on 12/18/21, on creating a realistic virtual Harbin, I mention Friends Hospital (1813) as an asylum (philosophy even?), and in regards to Harbin Hot Springs as a hot springs's retreat center, and even regarding online psychiatry at WUaS (for Harbin circles esp too) http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/12/doubledays-hummingbird-cynanthus.html?m=0 - Creating a Realistic Virtual Earth Harbin for Tourism

Am venturing forth on a walk to the UU Church of Kensington in the rain ... 1.8 miles one way ... Wanna meet there on spur of moment - how far is it for you one way, Ed? :)
Saturday · 9:43 PM
Hey Scott. Where'd the day go? As to picnic, I will bring some dal and a few other things. The McFarlane clan zoom call touched on Kamala Harris. Apparently, the White House culinary staff is learning how to prepare rice and peas, and curried goat, etc.
That diurnal rhythm thing, Ed ? 🙂 ... sounds good ... looks like the weather underground is now reporting rain today and rain Monday, but mist and fog tomorrow ... could me misty moisty .. will have to deliberate at trailhead about covered shoes without lift, or Birkenstocks with helpful lift ... will bring lunchy munchies too :) I'm optimistic that if we click on the same AllTrails' direction link into Maps, that it will take us to the same spot ... Maps said 42 minutes tonight ... sounds like Muir & Tennessee trail loop are pretty close ... see you there around 11am tomorrow 🙂
Looking forward to it. I pulled up the TSWG presentation. 2 hours! Who is that introducing you?
Loooking forward to it too! UC Berkeley Emeritus Nelson Graburn, Sociocultural Anthropology (and thanks to him for writing a Foreword to my first book Naked Harbin Ethnography! - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2021/01/white-desert-national-park-light-float.html :) See you soon!

Hi Ed, in auto, just leaving, see you soon :)
Hi, Scott, just finishing the dal. Sorry. See you soon.
Leaving now. 10:20 per Google Maps
See you around 11:20 then? (My clocks say it's 1042 now) ... Will explore :) I brought some Dal too :)

Great, see you there
At Muir beach - beautiful here, 2 surfers many families, Muir trail goes south from here I think but not from where I am overlooking beach See you in lot :)
Good to have internet signal too here :)

So great to hike ☺️😊 with you. Just returned ... Are you home? Am knackered as they say in Scotland ... Time for a week rest (so why can't I yet get my Madurai India photos to pop up with AI offline when I ask my smartphone ;)? SEE YOU SOON 🔜 :)

Hi David, (and Ma),

I hope you're having a good New Year! How are you?

Here's the amazing concert, that I'm wondering about riffing with in part with Piobaireachd (classical Scottish bagpiping music) inspirationally, with at least 2 Scottish smallpipes -

The Allman Brothers Band Featuring Jerry Garcia ‎– Live at the Cow Palace, 1973
https://youtu.be/DNAmXz8kc6I

at the
2:38:00 mark is close to what I had in mind, and heard the other day, for a piping blues' conversation with Piobaireachd, but what about this rhythm (and other instruments)?

and at the
2:56 for tone and rhythm - this may be the lullaby folk song I heard, with lyrics, and which I'm wondering about riffing with, with Piobaireachd ...
Hush Little Baby lyrics
https://www.considerable.com/entertainment/songs/hush-little-baby/

and at 3:16:00 or so

This concert is really 'together' - and kinda amazing, even a kinda trip :)

Musical cheers,
Scott
Happy New Year 2021  to you ~
