Dear Henry, Thomas, Jessie, All,
Am appreciative, too, of the role of making or coding chat bots for exploring consciousness - and regarding folk psychology 'mental states.' Broad, brain-storming questions, in what ways could all of us in a single realistic virtual earth with avatar bot chat bots import all of these chat bots' codes, and begin to develop them further to address the folk psychology- cognitive science divide; am thinking, for a realistic virtual earth, of Google Street View with time slider, Maps, Earth, with TensorFlow AI, Translate + where the little Google peg man avatar grows into 'artificial humans,' (or Samsung Neons) and even with a #FilmTo3D Application that could transpose the folk - you, I, and anyone interested in exploring these questions - into avatar bot chat bots - for further philosophy of mind consciousness research? Could we thus begin to create AI consciousness individually and differentially, mechanism-wise?

[CamPhilEvents] Henry Shevlin on Uncanny Believers at Mental Sciences today 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.
This is a reminder that our final meeting of the term will be held today from 4:00 to 5:30 when Henry Shevlin (senior research associate at the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence) will be presenting his paper 'Uncanny believers: chatbots, beliefs, and folk psychology’. The Zoom details and an abstract are appended below.
Our final meeting of term will be an in-person outdoor meet up at our usual time of 4:00 to 5:30 on Thursday June 17th at which we will socialise and brainstorm ideas for next academic year. Details to follow.
We hope to see lots of you later today!
Best wishes,
Jessie

> ABSTRACT. Recent developments in artificial intelligence research have revealed the power of large parameter language models like GPT-3 to generate believable and flexible responses to user prompts. These systems are not particularly intelligent in any demanding sense of the term. However, they can serve as believable if imperfect interlocutors in many contexts, and such systems are already seeing deployment as chatbots in a variety of roles ranging from customer service to entertainment and therapy. In this talk, I explore some issues arising from the human tendency to anthropomorphise such systems, with a specific focus on the attribution of beliefs. I argue that it is likely that people will (and indeed already are) attributing beliefs implicitly and explicitly to such systems, and that this is likely to have significant ramifications for both cognitive science and society at large. Such attributions, I go on to argue, lack much basis in contemporary theories of belief in cognitive science: even most of the more liberal accounts of belief would be unlikely to attribute humanlike beliefs to contemporary AI systems. I conclude with what I take to be an interesting dilemma for cognitive science and philosophy: to extent that the general public use psychological state terms more liberally than is supported by academic consensus, should it be our role to ‘re-educate’ the public, or should we instead be open to the idea that dominant models of belief and other mental states in academia no longer match ordinary usage of these terms?
Best,
Tom and Jessie

Ma,
Very glad your "Trip is going well" to Portland - and that Sandy seems well. Thanks for your nice note last night - sent from your smaller computer! :)
Good to hear that you've visited Sandy's studio twice, - in his other house! Glad too he's showing it to you! :) It seems like making sculpture and other related art like architectural designs and models, and ceramics, can be great ways to focus in this time of the social revolution due to non-SARSCoV2 genetics of the coronavirus pandemic outside of Wuhan in China and the Lombardy-Veneto area in Italy. Last time Sandy and I talked,
(and I continue to wonder if the Covid-19 pandemic social revolution is much about these 5 items - " "Hypothetical News" ... with first tentative headlines: ..." https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/04/himalyan-monal-how-are-harbin-hot.html (toward bottom) - and more in the blog since 4/1/20, but especially for cleaning up the illegal sex industry for example, and perhaps defining related illegality - ie some of the gray areas in the law - further even for effective law enforcement, and PSYCHIATRY, for example - and perhaps cultivating different and better social norms, for ex., if the illegal sex industry was knocked back to the stone age, and even for a wide variety of groups, subcultures, and identities),
... I think Sandy said he wasn't making any sculptures these days. Since you were at his South Freeport studio twice recently, is he, Ma? (Living in a 'safe house' - very sadly, and due hypothetically to the illegal sex industry in Canyon 94516 in part perhaps - thanks for reminding me about Sandy's other house in these regards possibly too).
Glad too you've said an emphatic "NO" to considering moving back into Canyon - I think it's probably a pretty contested or embattled place as a 'culture' also, with folks from NYC, and other countries too, invested in a harming vision there - which may go back any number of recent decades in its recent entanglements (legal, emotional, quid pro quo, etc.), and regarding the illegal sex industry too for example. Don't think I could bring a kind of even caring, or 'Christian' even (somehow Unitarian U? Nontheist Quaker? ???), ethic that would be transformative there for example, in the name of social justice and peace and protection of innocents and victims even. Am leaving that to the US federal government, working with the CA state government, BUT am skeptical they can even effect change there.
Glad the Portland area feels very safe too. It might be a good place to explore moving to possibly, as I explore next steps after leaving the basement I'm living in (which is cold, even in June!), but I'd like to continue to live out here in the SF Bay Area, perhaps moving into a new house in these parts ... and regarding both my actual-virtual, physical-digital earth & Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic STEAM project, and proximity to Harbin physically, as well as for CC-4 MIT OCW-centric wiki World Univ & Sch. Thinking about exploring becoming a professor at Cambridge University - and also to develop WUaS there, which might be attractive to all 31 constituent colleges at Cambridge for their endowment reasons - is an interesting thing to explore further (beyond exploring moving to Cambridge England this autumn, living in Girton College, - for career, and safety, and to develop virtual Harbin remotely too since Dr. Richard Jennings was in a Cambridge Philosophy talk about consciousness I was in on Thursday - https://www.girton.cam.ac.uk/people/dr-richard-c-jennings). But a Stanford-MIT-Harvard-WorldUniv&Sch collaboration would be better, and I could always fly to Cambridge Univ sometimes when governments get their houses in order (bio-warfare prevention-wise, for ex.) - and also even regarding both stopping illegal behavior, as well as cultural changes that may lead to different practices that are less harmful, lawbreaking, and kind of out of whack, out of balance ... a long-standing issue in modernity, and now in 'internetity,' a term 'm developing :)
Caring, generating a caring ethos, and even regarding individualism, continues to be a focus of mine, and with various unfolding careers, ethnographic, sociological, poetic, information technology studies-wise. ... for all 7.8 billion people on the planet regarding Universal Basic Income experiments to end poverty even?!
The Portland area however has some appeal too since Sandy and cousins all live there, and I don't really feel like I have any community out here, like who are my people? :)
Glad to be taking piping lessons with Stuart, and am appreciating his articulateness and wisdom and skill ... much to learn from him. Seeking to transcribe this second lesson.
Not sure where I'm most likely to meet a warm, radiant great fit of life partner (MD even?), but continue to circulate, and welcome possible introductions!
Thanks for your nice note, Ma, and please let me know what else you see and how Sandy is doing; please give him my love.
Aging reversal genetic drug therapies may also be emerging ... so it's good to stay safe in a variety of ways ahead, if we live well beyond 122 years of age, for ex., Ma!
Love, Scott
