Thanks so much for meeting and talking at Red Door Coffee on Minna Street just now - and as Legal Director at the Wikimedia Foundation! I'm particularly grateful per your clarification to have learned that CC is basically like copyright, but where the author has allowed for sharing under this new CC licensing (and that there really isn't a CC < > copyright divide, for example, as I had had in mind). Thanks too for your clarification that there are companies using CC Wikipedia content and making applications from this for sale. 

CC World University and School will keep in mind the kinds of CC licensing (exploring copyleft further possibly as well) as we develop in CC Wikidata, and potentially explore further creating 

1) a 501 (c) (3) side (which status WUaS has) building in CC Wikidata for free online CC best STEM OCW degrees (accrediting eg on CC MIT OCW in 7 languages and CC Yale OYC), and 

2) a WUaS Business/commercial side (even a publicly-traded company) - http://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2015/11/wuas-planned-revenue-streams-with-3-new.html - having conceived of this forking a few weeks ago - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2015/11/ashoka-saracaasoca-fork-all-languages.html.

I assume WUaS will have to keep these two, now forked, email lists of people completely separate database-wise. Would you agree? And do you think these names are distinct enough as two entiities 1) CC World University and School and 2) WUaS Business?

As for WUaS and WUaS Business keeping their email and databases separate, it would depend on what their respective privacy policies allow in terms of sharing email addresses and depend on the copyright status and licensing restrictions on for the databases. I think the names are distinctive enough -- they clearly show they are affiliated, but with different goals.

I'm not sure about teaching at this point. I actually didn't even have time to get breakfast or lunch today, so adding more projects on my plate is not the best idea right now. But reach out to me again in the future because my workload may have changed by then!

I'm writing to introduce you to one another. In fact, you may know (of) each other already, since Michelle went to Cal as an undergraduate and to UC Hastings' Law School, and since Bill is a Professor of Law at UC Berkeley's Boalt Law School. Michelle is the Legal Director at the Wikimedia Foundation's headquarters in SF and with whom I met yesterday for 45 minutes to talk about World University and School and Wikimedia, and for which I'm very appreciative. What I learned yesterday in talking with you, Michelle, is that WUaS could develop around a Creative Commons' licensed 501 (c) (3) core of 4 planned revenue streams for online CC degrees (accrediting on CC MIT OCW in 7 languages and CC Yale OYC, for example) a commercial side, even a possible publicly traded company, which side is presently planning for 8 other revenue streams, and in all 200+ countries and some 7,938 languages. This would involve a kind of forking of WUaS, which WUaS did conceptually a few weeks' ago - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2015/11/ashoka-saracaasoca-fork-all-languages.html. Dear L,

Three things have come to mind recently in response to WUaS developments today and yesterday -

1 getting a possible second and third opinion on Wikimedia Foundation Legal Director Michelle Paulson's suggestion that a 2nd WUaS commercial side would/could complement WUaS as a 501 c 3 . Retaining WUaS's 501c3 nonprofit status seems like a priority for a variety of reasons. And such a hybrid is new ground legally possibly.

2 JK and I spent 70 minutes talking today, and he suggested two foundations and is also willing to help read some grants to these that WUaS writes and make suggestions - and he called me - and our talking might also be a form of due diligence, but his company can't donate anything this year. I was grateful for our hour long + conversation nevertheless. He's perspicacious, insightful, experienced, and a listener (as am I), and a lawyer and MD.

While all of this is innovative and interesting, both getting financial results for WUaS as well as growing a fundraising / financial department is something I continue to seek to initiate for WUaS.

Lastly, (3) I'm hoping to hear back from Berkeley Prof Bill Kell soonish about his course (re my emails to him today) and WUaS and he will probably have good legal sense and ideas about all of this, when we do.

Very glad however to have given a Lightning Talk at the Wikimedia Foundation in November, and to have met with Michelle, whom I like, yesterday, and to have heard so clearly that, from her perspective, forking WUaS makes sense (and re Wikidata especially - re her clarification of how CC licensing works!), and that conceivably WUaS could move toward becoming a publicly traded company eventually on the one hand, while remaining a 501c 3 on the other. I'm a little skeptical, but CC Wikidata/Wikipedia, CC MIT OCW, CC Yale OYC, and the University of California network, and entrepreneurial California are great opportunities in which to explore this, at least conceptually, and good UC lawyers are joining this conversation. And the educational cultural "opening" for funding especially may be occurring too :)

Behavioral ecology: Exploratorium's ...

Hi Donald,

Exploratorium's line for free day at 1 down Pier 17 was as long as at 10 and the gift shop was much fuller, but I lingered there, found the hippies and Quantum physics' book by a MIT professor, noticed how each toy or book could open worlds, wound my way back through the market at the foot of Market, noticed then that I couldn't make the Canyon arts & crafts' event, got back, ate some chocolate ice cream on Skyline - a whole pint and it was good - and now will play some music. It's a museum for community and awareness actually, it says over the entrance door, of which I took a photo. And it costs $29, or $15 on Thursday nights these days. It's about a 45 minute walk from the Quaker Meeting, and I walked both ways. I thought about setting up an umbrella business on rainy days like today outside, but probably won't go through with this.

I'm good presently and in flux and questioning again at other times. This transition up North has been a bit of a ....let's just say that I am in reflection a lot....empty-nesting is seriously hard business...miss my kids soo much and know they are in good places and learning to find themselves without me there...freely flying! I'm trying to fly myself and at times find myself almost there, ...be patient I tell myself...figure out what you love most and live in that. 

Looking for community with people but feel that what I can count on most and draw energy from is my connection to nature. And nature I do have in abundance here!!! And Rain!!!!! What a feeling to awaken in the night and step out into my backyard just to feel the rain DROPS on my body. How I have missed the rain! I think given time, an encompassing sense of fulfillment will creep in again into my daily life...just in flux for now...

(Mondays at 8p in Berkeley is about 4 am in Glasgow, so not immediately ... )

There are often piping tunes in these weekly emails (like in last evening's Intro SCD class sheet music, which I played - eg Monymusk and Braes of Mar as well as Black Bear), which I'd like to bring up to speed in 2 or 6 days' time (and we do cycle through tunes as well over time).

Creative time here, just emailed my second Harbin chapter to Jo'C (and other friends) at SF Friends' Meeting for finalization. Chapters 1-4 are easy chapters - near completion. Adding photos in middle section after Chapter 4, which will determine rough pagination/indexing for chapters 5-9. Finickiness of indexing/editing/adding photos isn't my forte - in a now 450 page manuscript, but it is interesting and enjoyable to revisit the ideas in my book, when I get back into it. What is(are) the significance(s) of publishing a book (or a cognitive application, for that matter), I've been asking myself recently? I think there are many many, but I can't yet make them explicit.

Just came across a BBC version of of Yo-yo Ma playing all of the Bach Cello Suites at the Royal Albert Hall (the two versions on disk I know of are better) ... but this is nevertheless great ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nu9MDqGhIak. Thanks for your emails.

When I used a brain wave headset with just 3 sensors on the forehead in a headband in Greece about 10 years ago, made by an inventor from Ohio who was also there for a visit, I and any end user could pick letters from a keyboard on a computer screen to spell words (e.g. "HELLO WORLD" - and when I used this I remember picking letters to spell a word of my choice, and this video says - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9OZQ7X590I - "The technology can use facial muscles and brain waves to control a computer keyboard and a mouse" - see, too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vh6UbFdysiY - but I can't find a current Youtube that shows someone actually picking letters), and the end user also needed to be able to relax fully to use the device. This suggests to me the beginnings of high-level cognition as a brain-wave output channel, as well as therefore "developing systems that reason, plan, and use language" because this letter picking involved all of the above. And that this eventually could interface with cognitive systems. How far from inter-facing, and in what ways, seems to be an opportunity for academic brain and AI researchers.

What I have in mind by ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy - is a film-realistic, interactive, group build-able, 3D virtual earth - think Google Street View / Maps / Earth with OpenSim and Second Life - in all languages. And for all of us to add, do and model our STEM research also in all languages - including brain linguistics' research. I think some avatars these days are already kinds of digital robots, and will become very much more sophisticated. What's interesting about this realistic virtual earth approach is that Google has much of the infrastructure to integrate all of this including Google Translate and the new TensorFlow AI software (and World University and School - WUaS - is Google-verified and has Google Classroom, for example). I also see this developing realistic virtual earth as a classroom for CC WUaS's free CC MIT OCW-centric degree courses moving toward free bachelor, Ph.D., Law, M.D. and I.B. degrees in most countries' main languages. So WUaS will have lots of high achieving and creative students to help explore related research questions digitally and build out such technologies.

It would be great to talk further about this in person some time.

Dear Larry and sporadic Universitians, 

Very nice to talk with you just now, Larry.

Three further things came to mind to add to our phone conversation just now: 

1. Wikispecies and MediaWiki now have data access to Wikidata.

This is momentous because WUaS MediaWiki will now be able to build in Wikidata, but we haven't yet heard back from Romaine Wiki or the other core group of Wikidata developers I'm hoping are beginning to build this. Perhaps when I talk in person with the Wikimedia Foundation Legal Director on Monday, we can further this communication. 

2. WUaS has an invitation to make another presentation at the Friends' Association of Higher Education at Woodbrooke Quaker Centre in England in June of 2016, but FAHE also got back to me saying they'd like me to focus on standards, and internationally, I think, rather than an overview of WUaS in a new way, like my presentation in June. This may involve too exploring accrediting additionally with a Quaker organization.  

3. Concerning picking letters from a computer screen keyboard and using Brainfingers brain wave headset WITHOUT language or gestures, I did this about 10 years ago, which is significant for developing Artificial Intelligence/Cognitive Systems, and how WUaS would build an ALL-languages' research project for this re ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy, - but how close this may be, in multiple ways, to informing how we build cognitive systems with AI is something for researchers and WUaS students to continue to focus on.

Interesting ... when choosing to spell a word which then gets transposed by the brain-wave headset into on-screen keyboard action, I assume some high-level cognition is involved. Language-use and -choice with brain-wave headsets for me entails high-level cognition as well as the involvement of a system that reasons, plans, (and, of course, uses language), i.e. the brain. Here's the OCW courseware -
http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/brain-and-cognitive-sciences/ - which I hope AI learners, both matriculated and open-ended at WUaS, will engage to further explore these questions and hypotheses.

I think too that the hypothesis that one could use a brain-wave headset (such as Brainfingers) to play with DragonBox Algebra, as a cognitive system, is testable, given my experiences with picking letters on a digital keyboard about 10 years ago without words or gestures, see -

Thanks for this thread, and I guess this NtF email list is becoming both a way of generating Nontheist Friends' history, as well as exploring related questions - something seasoned Quakers seem to move into with time (although it would be great to keep this beautiful generative NtF email conversation going through the centuries "in the now" and as information technologies develop beyond the epistle and the email, for example). I think Friends enjoy exploring Quaker history quite a bit as well (although I continue to be interested in an ongoing way "in the valley of love and delight" from that old Shaker? hymn, "'Tis a gift to be simple" ... and am grateful these concepts found their way into Friendly song and also are making their way through time, beyond history). 

In terms of "Where to post Quaker history question about communal living?", there were quite a few Quaker-attenders living in two communal houses (the Brooklyn Street house, near People's Food Co-op, and the Woodward Street house) in southeast Portland, Oregon, in the first half of the 1980s, most of whom were attending Reed College (e.g. see http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2009/06/pacific-hemlock-portland-oregon-reed.html) - and all of whom were bicycle riders. 

As a child of the 1960s, with a vision for living in community, and with communal living "in the air" in the 1970s (my teen years), my experiences with Quaker communal houses probably began in the 1970s in Pittsburgh, PA, where there was a house owned, I think, by Pittsburgh Friends Meeting and which was a kind of commune (Walter Mead, who lived there - are you on this email list? I think RKC, also in Pgh, is still). One of my first girlfriends lived in this house as well. 

From these Portland, Oregon, collective houses, some of us visited, and thought about living at, Alpha Farm http://members.pioneer.net/~alpha/index.htm on the Oregon Coast (west of Eugene, OR, along Deadwood Creek), which began as a kind of exodus from Quaker Philadelphia story around 1972, to set up a hippie commune and go back to the land on a farm, engaging Friends' principles and Quaker decision-making, but secularly (and it's still in operation, and welcomes visitors to share in their life to this day - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2014/02/red-elderberry-alpha-farm-quaker.html), as well as their earth-aware vision. It thus comes out of a similar tradition as NtFs, as I see it, and re a different kind of community, quite explicitly for communal living. After graduating from Reed College (in Religion and German) and leaving Portland, Oregon, (in 1987) I was still very interested in communal living, and communities, and found my way to Pendle Hill, a Quaker Center for Study and Contemplation, near Swarthmore College, SW of Philadelphia in a suburb (and also near Media, PA, where there was a partly Quaker-inspired break-in of a FBI office in "1971" - with a film of this name too - by the "Citizens' Commission to Investigate the FBI" - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citizens%27_Commission_to_Investigate_the_FBI - and partly the brain child of Haverford physics' professor Bill Davidon, whose daughter is a member of San Francisco Friends Meeting, and with whom I saw this interesting film not too long ago). 

After being a student for a year there, I stayed at Pendle Hill for about another 3 years, before heading to the SF Bay Area to study Yoga (doing a 2 year Iyengar Yoga certificate course in a year, but very much appreciating Angela and Victor's yoga throughout this process).  Upon returning to the Bay Area, Reed friends were still living in communal houses (kinds of Berkeley hippie communes in a way, but without many Quakers in them, that I'm aware of), which I stayed in. 

I think folk song and music themselves can inspire the vision of communitas, community and communal living, and even generate kinds of communality or communal living in the moment. Perhaps the Quaker lyrics' book "Rise Up Singing" (with its new companion volume) with its many protest songs came out of such a vision of a kind of communal living.

Does Woodbrooke, like Pendle Hill's communal living (as well as all the Friendly-Informed Kendall Corporation's continuing care centers on the east coast of the US) have any "communal living" roots? Are there examples of communal living from the British Isles that you would point too (beyond perhaps Old Jordans west of London, which I've heard has the highest concentration of Quakers in the UK, or possibly still in NW England)? Or in Seattle where you were based for some while working for Microsoft? (Nice to have met you in person at Meeting in SF a few years ago:)

Just came across a BBC version of of Yo-yo Ma playing all of the Bach Cello Suites at the Royal Albert Hall (the two versions on disk I know of are better) ... but this is nevertheless great ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nu9MDqGhIak. (But I think there are hints of improvisation in Bach, and certainly in these other musics - Grateful Dead and Raga - where you'll also find these Cello Suites - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2015/12/rhynchosia-music-shared-eliciting.html ) ... and yet they're often sad ... (and the last Cello Suite is in D Major - which can also be A mixolydian which my small pipes are in and which I might be able to explore ) ... This focus on eliciting loving bliss neurophysiology is a kind of philosophical inquiry, with an interest in making scientific, with MDMA as one reference experience, and in terms of brain science (see related MIT OCW, for example), but also in terms of people actually realizing accessing such neural cascades of pleasure when and as they want them (in the context of socio-culture too).

It's when we can do this without words or gestures that new fun will emerge.
