Friends 

Making friends is hard 


Thanks, Jim (Spohrer),

Making friends in my experience is easy, in the past, and very, and in many different places, from neighborhoods my family lived in, to Cuttyhunk island since 1966,  (to French speaking Geneva Switzerland with my parents and brother), to high school at Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh, to Edinburgh, Scotland, for a student year there, to college, at Reed College, to Munich Germany, for a student year there at Ludwig Maximilian University through a Reed College program, to Pennsylvania at a Quaker Center for Study and Contemplation, Pendle Hill, near Philadelphia, but slightly different after heading ...


... to California (all with slightly hippy community minded alternative culture, as vision too, informing this since high school, and even grade school in Hamden CT next to New Haven), to the SF Bay Area from around 1991, at the Iyengar Yoga Institute of SF, and then teaching Yoga in SF, to Semester at Sea in 1999, to UC Santa Barbara for graduate school from 2001, to Edinburgh again at the University of Edinburgh in School of Celtic and Scottish Studies in 2003, for further graduate school, then back to the SF Bay Area for Harbin research anthropologically, Semester at Sea again in 2005 ... Am curious how to make new friends now after 18 months of self-quarantine, and 13 years before this in topsy turvy Canyon, doing field work for, and writing, first large book (324 pp, 8 1/2 x 11), my first "Naked Harbin Ethnography," and then writing 4 subsequent books of poetry, and while developing CC-4 MIT OCW-CENTRIC wiki Work World University and School beginning around 2006-07, in Pgh (after my father came back from Semester at Sea in Belize with a brain injury, and passed away in Nov 2007, significantly impaired for the last 2 3/4 years of his life), ... and mostly developing MIT OCW-centric wiki WUaS thereafter from Canyon since November 2008 (where, in Canyon, the idea of friends, making friends, is pretty upside down, in my experience, regarding its, I think, scofflaws and outlaws too - and since the Canyon community can seem to me to be a bit 'bent' or very sick even too ... so a bit alienating to my socially responsible Friends' ethics even ... and where Harbin has parallels to Canyon, but emerges in my ethnographic interpretation since 1972, when founder Ishvara - Bob Hartley got the property, and is therefore fascinating Ethnographically ... And both have hippy orientations counter culturally too, which I appreciate) ... and even also especially regarding the 'Religious Society of Friends' (RSOF) aka Quakers, in California and with west coast Quakers/Friends, having been involved in Quaker Meetings in Portland Oregon (during College years), and in Santa Barbara (while studying for a Master's degree at UCSB) in addition to the SF Bay Area ... aren't well, and seem to be, in great number, in need of effective Psychiatry - and maybe WUaS can help - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Psychiatry - (my having gotten involved with Friends through a Quaker family which my family had a Xmas meal with for about 23 years, the father of which was a brilliant Lacanian MD psychiatrist (a Yale university alumnus like yourself - where my father was on the faculty at Yale from about 1966-72), - and California too doesn't seem conducive to me to making friends like I did before, culturally (where in California everyone is a 'deadhead' which is an observation I've made before to friends ... lacking the expressions of giving and receiving affection somehow) ... Ed Smyth MD is a good friend, but is navigating his own life, and partner, almost an empty nester, and Byron also is a good friend, a wonderful friend from Reed, (but yet he grew up in the SF BAY AREA, in Piedmont, ... and his wife Cindy is from San Diego and went to Stanford, and so they're Californians in a way, which I may be learning to become, as I've observed to them.

I have a great circle of friends, albeit distributed, and am reminded of the singing round ``Make new friends, but keep the old..." in these regards ... where singing can be a great way to make friends too.

And if aging reversal genetic drug therapies and vaccines emerge, how will making friends in new ways develop if we live until 150 years of age ... and long into the future (thanks to genetic engineering revolution, which may have been jump started over the past 18 months of nonSARS CoV2 non Epidemic self-quarantine)?

Am wondering how Byron will respond, and re and regarding his daughters' peers in Moraga ... and I think he remembers too radiant Susan T. at Reed, who was a far-reaching mutual love, and is a friend (friendship) I continue to learn from re seeking a life friend  ... Byron and Cindy and Erica lived in Scotland for 3 years, and their younger daughter Ellen (who may be engaged) and who be heading to Medical School, was born there, so is a Scot in many ways, and the only Scot in their family, regarding identity questions, and friendship too (where I become a member of the RSOF in Edinburgh Scotland in 2003-4, but where Edinburgh is a bit alienated too, perhaps differently from California's 'deadhead'-ness re friendship, in my observations) ...
