My question is - 
Who are the Scottish Freemasons sociologically too - identity-wise? (And regarding California?)

I can imagine lots of Scots around Oakland at the turn of the 19th century (the Muir and Carnegie names come to mind) ... but why the association with the Freemasons then?

There would have been opportunity in America if one could pay for the passage on a ship from (poor) Scotland to an unknown uncertain economic future in the New World of the USA ... 

Upgraded building over the years ... Now targeting Corporations - which could have been unique American organizations of economic opportunity too ... with more entrepreneurial freedom in the USA than other countries to create them

I guess they were all predominantly builders, from the name 'masons' (and thus had some cash flow) ... (1) Companion: Finding a life companion is not easy, but your mother has given you the best advice.  Meeting new people in a group situation is a great way to start.  In group situations, find a way to help others and show good humor and patience in the face of adversity.  That shows a caring attitude, which many find attractive.  You may enjoy reading this article about the pros and cons of living alone.  Glad your mother is a role-model for caring.

(2) WUaS:  WUaS is a wonderful vision.   You are living a life of purpose - and this is important.   Learning (upskilling is the current buzzword) is so important to meaning in life.  WUaS will become real someday.  Technologies to help are getting there, slowly but surely.  For example, today I use YouTube technology to learn practical things like how to clean a clogged drain, or what to do with leftover sauerkraut.   As I see technologies that can help you with WUaS, I will let you know.  Setting ambitious goals shows that you care about  future generations, which many find attractive.  Glad your father is a role-model for setting ambitious goals.

(3) Quaker: Your Quaker background has helped you set a high moral standard.  You may want to play with "AllenAI Delphi" which is an attempt to create an AI capable of making moral judgments.  This article explains its many weaknesses and limitations.  Glad to be a technology scout, if that is helpful to you.  That is probably where I can be most helpful. However, since technology is advancing on so many fronts, I will only be scanning a tiny fraction of what is relevant for achieving your life goals and purpose.  I think you are also a technology scout.  Thank-you for sharing interesting technologies that you find with me.  That is appreciated.

Now that I am retired, I try to stay focused on my family and my life goal - which is simply to understand the world better, and share any glimmers of understanding with others (via ISSIP.org and the service science/open source AI literature). 

However, I also ask myself everyday, who have I helped besides my family and myself.  It is important to me to always have an answer to "who have I helped today?" - the last 4-5 minutes of the YouTube, explain why helping others is a form of enlightened self-interest.  I like helping people with ambitious goals, that if realized, would be the kind of world that I think future generations of people would like to live in.  So in a sense, helping others helps advance service science.  Which I know is a bit selfish of me.  A moral dilemma.  Perhaps I should ask AllenAI Delphi "Is helping others a selfish act" and "Is patience a virtue?"  Delphi reminds me a bit of Eliza, the old MIT AI chatbot from the 1960s.  Happy technology scouting to you!!!

Thanks! Hasn't happened since around 1991 when I moved here, but Byron, Cindy, Erica, and Ellen Hann identify as Scots', I think, and while Ellen is the only Scot amongst them (having been born in Scotland), am wondering whether somehow an introduction from her older sister, Erica, to a friend from high school, might be possible.

The possibility of living centuries ahead due to Gene technology opens possibly having many families even ... scouting-wise ... N'est-ce pas?

Yes, I know you scout technologies in many areas including life extension and cryptocurrencies.  Have not looked at them - since I try to stay focused.  Very hard in such an interesting and diverse world.  Hard to focus, but I try.

Yes, have been playing Scottish Small Pipes in Open Band in Berkeley for Scottish Country Dancing for nearly 10 years now, and Scottish Country Dancing before that (left longer leg tweaks left hip now so no more dancing). Won a prize for Piobaireachd classical Scottish Bagpiping music at the Pleasanton highland games some years ago too (grade 4) ... But even Clan MacLeod tent there hasn't lead to life partner yet for example (and Mrs MacLeod Pacific is great ... Tammie Vawter)... But while I may begin to play in Open Band music-making at St Clement's Episcopal Church soon ... Am calling for abolition of the illegal sex industry internationally among Scottish Country Dancing internationally too.

And this morning's WUaS Corporation Monthly Business Meeting (WUaS too as a whole) is a further Friendly development of this, as its President and Presiding Clerk (in a good Quaker sense as well, re a kind of service listening, and STEM science too).

Yes, I'm still circulating in seeking a life partner and to begin a family, potentially a MD (AND learning from or building upon past previous loved friends, A & S in particular) but it's a new world after 18 months of non-genetic Non-epidemic self-quarantine, and 13 years before that living in Canyon. Haven't heard back from Byron and Cindy yet either in these regards.

Yes, Friends (re ethics too, & SPICES, and caring) or friendly cultures seem not very widespread in the SF Bay Area but Stammtisch and ongoing teaching and learning and information sharing may perhaps help grow friends further. Risk taking and aversion are part of this. Quality caring are things I've learned from my mother (but also to take risks from my Dad, and to aim for excellence too, hence CC-4 MIT OCW-CENTRIC WORLD UNIV AND SCH in part).

WUaS will perhaps become financially operational because of THE WUaS Corporation possibly working with the state of California and listing on the Silicon Valley long-term stock exchange the Stanford Mine Pi cryptocurrency for free universal education and to end poverty via UBI EXPERIMENTS TO all 7.8 billion people in most of all 200 countries backed by most of their central banks, but this may also take a while. Didn't hear back from the state of California FTB twice this week in the Canyon 94516 USPO after getting and paying a tax bill for 3 years recently (and getting 3 other duplicate tax bills in one way or another), even though Robert Morgan at the FTB said he'd send something about this I think on paper. Will wait a few days further or ignore these other bills per conversation with Larry re WUaS Monthly Business Meeting.

Thinking I'd like to begin a new Scottish music-making band - "The Rock blues' Piobaireachd lament' (open?) band - much online at first, practices at 5:45 pm PT on Mondays, for an hour or so, (perhaps before Open Band gathers physically at St. Clement's for 7;30 PMPT Scottish Country Dancers ...) ... While this might be way way too late to all play together if Stuart wants to join in, perhaps if some music emerges from those 8 Piobaireachdys (with emergent new sheet music from these esp.), as well as some version of real real time music-making on the Google platform, we can figure out a better time for the extraordinary piper and teacher Stuart Liddell in Argyllshire, Scotland to make music with, and share your thinking too!:) Could we play for different dancers, rock and roll and blues' people who wait for the music to dance them? :))

- if I had a band - Open Band? - that could start to rock Piobaireachd blues' laments, slowly, with the 8 Piobaireachds attached, and so that I could on the Scottish Small Pipes (SSP) start playing from this sheet music lead for these "rock Piobaireachd blues' laments" what would that band sound like?

I'm thinking in terms of the key of A mixolydian (with the 7th a half step below a concert scale, ie the high G, and the low G too, on the Scottish Small Pipes' A chanter .... ) ... but could think in terms of the B flat mix chanter - which a Great Highland Bagpipe could play with ... or the SSP D chanter

Wanna try in group video conferencing sometime? 5:45 pm PT on some Mondays, - and then actually and physically at St. Clement's after this, but before SCD? Could this 'hypothetical Open Band' - and as a machine learning band too - start to 'lay down' the band music for these 8 different Piobaireachds, and could we all from home, in time with the music coming from this new open band playing, begin to play from home, perhaps each of us improvising in our way with the 'conductor-orchestra-band' (inspired and informed by the Allman Bros' '73 at Cow Palace, Bo Diddley, or the Grateful Dead in the 1970s as rock blues' 'energies' especially) of the Open Band music streaming 'rock Piobaireachd blues laments' through the video conference (due to the limitations of lag in 'real time' music-making now, and waiting on 'real real time' music making), and changing as machine learning, as it 'hears' each of us playing differently? 

If it began to be happening 'rock Piobaireachd blues' laments' music slowly at first and for rock and roll dancers too, move the Scottish Country Dancing session to 5-7pm on Mondays, and then 'rock Piobaireachd blues' laments'  rock and roll music for dancers to 7:30-9:30 and attract a whole new set of Dancers from the Claremont Hotel and Spa too? Out by 9:30 pm ... all if the Diocesan rules would allow 2 forms of Scottish dancing and music-making to take place on a Monday evening, all from 5pm-9:30pm or 10 pm PT?

And lots of us could build on the 'Open Band Machine Learning Band' music ... with our own innovations ... like the amazing piper Stuart Liddell esp:) and possibly quite a few of us experimenters, 'rock Piobaireachd blues' laments' - wise  :)
