Creating "Piobaireachd rocking the Blues" * * * I'm wondering if we could explore 'teaching' 'machine learning' a lesson? . . . with rock and roll blues' energy to accompany playing Scottish small pipe chanters!

Hi Patti, Stuart, Taylor, Open Band (https://twitter.com/TheOpenBand/status/1458138108336115718?s=20), All,

Greetings, and I hope this finds you well.

Thanks for the news that Scottish Country Dancing will begin at St Clement's in Berkeley next Monday, after some 20 months of non-SARS CoV2 non-epidemic! Good news.

I'm writing to explore further some band Scottish music-making explorations.

Am curious about a new genre of bagpiping I'm creating - which I'm calling at this stage "Piobaireachding the Blues" - and potentially with the AI Machine Learning musical platform in the Google ecosystem, broadly construed.

Patti, wanna riff with Piobaireachd with the blues on piano? :)

Here's a blog post from today - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2021/11/dahlia-creating-piobaireachding-blues.html - but there are quite a few "Piobaireachding the Blues" posts already in daily blog.

So, I'm wondering if we could explore 'teaching' 'machine learning' a lesson? :) The idea (and possibly with other creative projects that Stuart and Taylor might get involved with at World University and School) is 1) to begin to riff with, on a 9 note chanter in A, say, the Allman Bros in 1973 at Cow Palace in SF, and from about 2 hours 30 minutes forward for 45 minutes (which is playable with on the A mixolydian chanter to some degree). And then adapting such music, machine-learning-wise, to play Piobaireachd with such new blues and rock and roll bands playing thanks to Allman Bros' (or (or the Grateful Dead in the '70s - eg https://youtu.be/7QwUy1D_2Xo - so a bit in the mode of psychedelic blues & rock and roll as well)) energy-creations :)

The Allman Brothers Band Featuring Jerry Garcia ‎– Live at the Cow Palace, 1973

To cut to the chase, Patti, could you play on the piano this Lament for the Old Sword Piobairachd (attached) in a Blues or slow Boogie Woogie (as slow as Piobaireachd, with its variations as well), and this Allman Bros' inspired ... such that I, hypothetically, could play this tune on the A chanter on the Scottish small pipes, ... you on the piano? (Here, your human skill as a piano player would be machine learning itself, in a sense:) And could a recording of you playing this then be adapted by Google machine learning to this tune, such that machine learning learns Allman Bros' and rock and roll energy - from you - such that I could later play with this tune, with machine learning as a band, an Open Band in a sense ?:) And could we print some of these new 'Piobarieachd rockin' the Blues' arrangements on paper too? (Then could we record you playing blues' piano inspired by Allman Bros' '73 like this for 5-10 further Piobaireachd, some in different keys, such that machine learning could integrate all these, and this rock and roll 'energy' as well as blues' energy and music - Piobaireachd is a Scottish way of playing the Blues I'd suggest :) ... )

Am curious to sit out on my garden patio (in the 'safe house' I'm living in) and play and record on my Scottish small pipes with a 'backup band' - or accompanying guitar too in a sense (while I read from Piobaireachd sheet music) - of machine learning informed Piobaireachd accompaniment that rocks, and sounds great, possibly all 200 - 300 of the older Piobaireachds, such that each melody of these pieces would be recognizable, albeit transformed significantly from the non-mensural, or elastic notes and rhythms and styles, of Piobarieachd classical bagpipe music genre ... And where pipers and many would love to hear this because the music was happening, and thus growing numbers of listeners by leaps and bounds.:)

Taylor, and Stuart, if we could arrange real real time music making - say via a Google platform - and you could also access the GDocs' SCD sheet music each week, would you like to join with this experimental opportunity, or at least play with Open Band, from sheet music, from Scotland and Georgia? Thanks for the Piobaireachd lesson recently, Stuart, at 5 am Pacific Time here, - from Scotland!

Thanks, and see you all soon,
Scott

Monday Night SCD & Open Band Beginning Again

Hi All,

So we’re going to start up the Berkeley Monday class on Nov. 15, on a bi-weekly basis. Bruce will teach the 1st class, but then he and I will be gone 11/29 and 12/13. Julie Wyrick will be covering piano for me on those dates.

The class has mandated that EVERYONE be vaccinated against COVID, and will need to show proof of vaccination before being allowed in. The hall is subject to stricter diocesan rules as well as City of Berkeley health orders (copied below), so for now, even though the City might allow no masks, it's all masks all the time (except while actively drinking water) for events held at St. Clement’s.

There will be a sign in sheet, and a roster of all who have shown proof of vaccination will be maintained so you’ll only need to show it once.

How has the system of having the PDFs uploaded to the rscds monday google drive that Barbara Judd had started a while ago?  (It had the monday folder and then jig, reel, strathspey, waltz, and hambo folders). I am not as tech savvy as Barbara and might be inclined to just keep sending PDFs, but if we do continue the system, we may need to set up a separate gmail address to run them out of, and ask the Berkeley Class music fund to cover the cost of a lot of storage. Anyway, I’ll send PDFs for Monday (and maybe Barbara will put them on the google drive for me?) and we can sort it out later.

Thanks, and looking forward!!

IN SOME FULLY VACCINATED SPACES, EMPLOYERS CAN CHOOSE WHETHER MASKS SHOULD BE WORN

mask mandate still applies in most public spaces
Berkeley, California (Thursday, October 28, 2021) -

The City of Berkeley Health Officer will, on November 1, grant certain indoor settings that verify full vaccination the choice to allow people to remove face coverings.

The offices, gyms, places of worship and other hosts covered by the order would have to ensure that no one entering has fever, cough, congestion, nausea, headache, runny nose, muscle aches or any other COVID-19 symptoms.

These groups would also be controlled by:

  • not opening to the general public
  • limiting size to no more than 100 people
  • limiting access to the same, regularly gathering group
  • maintaining a list that identifies the names, dates, times of entry and exit of everyone who enters the indoor space
  • posting signs promoting self-assessment for symptoms around the exterior of the space

This decision to allow certain indoor spaces where entirely vaccinated people can choose to unmask reflects the decline in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations as well as the enduring power of vaccination to limit spread and, especially, severe illness.

Nonetheless, lowering risk by wearing a mask is something hosts or individuals may continue to choose. Universal masking remains particularly important when including guests with weaker immune systems or that are more vulnerable to severe illness.

"Vaccinations and face coverings protected our community and the region as a whole from the worst that the Delta variant inflicted elsewhere," said Dr. Lisa B. Hernandez, the City of Berkeley Health Officer. "With that success, we now have some spaces where hosts can choose whether their guests must mask."

Who is covered

As long as they control their settings as described above, the following places would be allowed to set their own rules for indoor masking:

  • indoor offices
  • gyms
  • fitness centers
  • employee commuter vehicles
  • religious gatherings
  • other organized gatherings of individuals who meet regularly

Fully vaccinated people cannot be unmasked at indoor special events such as weddings, concerts or conferences.

Hosts must verify vaccination status

If unvaccinated people are inside these controlled settings, everyone must mask. To verify vaccination, employers or hosts can use different documents that verify vaccination, and each should include:

  • name of the vaccinated person
  • type of vaccine provided
  • date(s) the dose or doses were given

Acceptable records with that information include:

  • A Vaccination Card issued by the CDC or foreign government
  • A photo, copy or digital copy of a Vaccination Card
  • healthcare provider record confirming vaccination
  • COVID-19 vaccine record issued via myvaccinerecord.cdph.ca.gov or that of another state, local, or foreign government
  • An authentic digital record with QR code that, when scanned by a SMART Health Card reader, displays the vaccine recipient's name, date of birth, vaccine dates and vaccine type.

Patti, (All), thanks so much for your email, and re Piobaireachd rocking the blues ... and now worries and no hurry ... These 200 - 300 Piobaireachd could be fun creative explorations, and I look forward to coming into conversation about them.

While I shared some Tweets with friends recently from the head of the WHO, Tedros (an Ethiopian I think), citing that ~5 million people have died, in the past 20 months, reTweeted by Gordon Brown (former prime minister of Britain), which may be similar to the statistics you share below, I wonder if the 'Pan' prefix in Pan-demic - could in some possible meaning shifts refer to the genus Pan - "a Greek god of pastures, flocks, and shepherds usually represented as having the legs, horns, and ears of a goat Pan" (as in Pan troglodyte - common chimps, and Pan paniscus, bonobo chimps) ... and whether too Homo sapiens, could be conceivably reconstrued as Pan sapiens (in a new words, or neo-logistical sense) ?  And could 'demic' (referring possibly to 'people'? as in democracy) ... and a 'demic diffusion' refer to not only a people diffusion (but a migratory model), but also perhaps of a 'meme' - the Covid-19 spiked ball SYMBOL and language esp. - which meme I can define as a 'cultural replicating unit'  - of possibly 'Pan' -like behavior (where Richard Dawkins uses as examples for the word 'meme' in his 1976 "Selfish Gene" book, a novel, as a meme, or a pretty summer dress) ... In a blog post on April 1, 2020, just about a month into the Coronavirus pandemic in the USA, I wondered if the Coronavirus pandemic, in 5 Hypothetical News' Items, was for keeping kids safe - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/04/himalyan-monal-how-are-harbin-hot.html ... and perhaps regarding sexual predators, purveyors, and offenders, and law breakers - and regarding the profit motive too - who might benefit greatly from psychiatry, and a change in culture too. ... Just thinking in writing ... This is my thinking and theorizing about what seem to be non biological virus events (and see too the other Hypothetical news' items in this blog post ... and related ideas spread throughout my blog since then, much in the 'genes' label ...)

If the medical establishment has been even spiking vaccines, and tragically perhaps killing people, and recorded on their electronic medical records with a Covid-19 non-virus diagnosis, how this will all play out with time is yet to be seen, but will take a long long time to figure out who made the decisions, etc., and how to bring justice and social justice to possible victims ...etc ...

Abolition-ally, and Non-theistic F/friendly good Quaker regards, Scott
Will seek to share some of this further here in today's blog post ...

Cheers, Scott

Hi Scott,

Thank you for your thoughts. I will spend some time trying to parse out what you are asking re: playing Piobaireachd with the blues - but generally I would say that any modal tune can work well with a blues interpretation. I don’t really have time at the moment to explore, but will keep it on a back burner until I do.

But meanwhile, I need to ask you what you mean by, "after some 20 months of non-SARS CoV2 non-epidemic” (emphasis mine). Are you saying “non-epidemic” because, technically, it is a “pandemic”, rather than an epidemic?*

(*What are the differences between a pandemic and an epidemic in the context of COVID-19?

• Epidemic is a sudden outbreak of a disease in a certain geographical area.
• Pandemic is an outbreak of a disease that has spread across several countries or continents. It is basically an epidemic that has spread internationally and covers a wider geographic area.)

I trust that is all you mean. If you are asserting, however, that the massive number of wide-spread non-SARS CoV2 infections (case and death data below) are somehow not an epidemic, I feel I need to register my disagreement (and utter dismay) at that suggestion. Best,

Patti

Patti, All,

Per your -

"But meanwhile, I need to ask you what you mean by, "after some 20 months of non-SARS CoV2 non-epidemic” (emphasis mine). Are you saying “non-epidemic” because, technically, it is a “pandemic”, rather than an epidemic?*

(*What are the differences between a pandemic and an epidemic in the context of COVID-19?"

This is how I'd respond, and with a query -
Does an epidemic refer to the rapid uncontrolled biological transmission of biological viruses, or bacteria, whereas could a pandemic refer to the rapid uncontrolled transmission of meme viruses (replicating cultural units) like words or symbols? This is what I'd hypothesize regarding your question, to try to respond directly.
