Tym!

What is the Oregon dream or vision or similar for you - and since the 1960s and '70s, since when we met there (at Reed in 1979, I think), but also before this (ie re Oregon Trail ... as a journey, a place of opportunity, western freedom in US even, I'd suggest)? The musical group 'Oregon' beginning in 1970 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oregon_(band) - expresses some of this for me in far-reaching ways. And I explore this some too in my blog in the 'Oregon' label - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Oregon (see the Reed College label, as well - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Reed%20College) and part of my Oregon vision finds form in my visiting my Uncle Ted and Aunt Mary Brown in eastern Oregon on their Wisdom Creek Ranch, which they first got in 1959, after attending the Quaker college, Earlham in Indiana, and with my uncle Ted growing up in Ohio (with his parents both having roots in Boulder, Colorado - another place of western US vision (ie near where the 1st Rainbow gathering happened in around 1973 - see multiple 'Rainbow Gathering' labels in my blog too re all for this).

Am listening the Grateful Dead just now from 1988 in Hampton Virginia, - https://youtu.be/-uYVPvtLan0 and although I pretty much only like the Dead from 1965-1979, there are a couple of good shows which 'take me there' like this one .... Just searched on how often the Grateful Dead played at the Oregon Country Fair - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oregon_Country_Fair - another expression of this Oregon dream for me ... did you ever go in the early '80s? - and will look into this ffuurrttheerr. :)

Oregon for you? :)

Warmest regards, Scotty

These are great too, especially the last beauty of a piece (around 40 minutes) they play, with Trilok Gurtu singing a kind of mouth music or percussion (India-informed) ..

Oregon - Jazzgipfel Stuttgart 1993

https://youtu.be/BBsmdYaKYhI

Ralph Towner - classical & 12-string guitars, pianos & synthesizers
Paul McCandless - oboe, bass clarinet, soprano & sopranino saxes, whistles
Glen Moore - double-bass
Trilok Gurtu - percussion

(Just beginning to listen, has much potential: Oregon (Towner, Walcott, McCandless, Moore) - Berliner Jazztage 1980 [radio broadcast]
https://youtu.be/I8A4be54Pko )

Warmly, Scotty

Hey Tym,
Just found a new Youtube video of Oregon playing from 1975 -
https://youtu.be/rCwswfIeD0c - which is great. They tune into each other musically so well. Do you listen to Oregon very much these days at all? (Was just in Portland, OR, the weekend before last at Reed FAR).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oregon_(band) ... there's a slight resemblance between you in the early 1980s and Paul McCandless here in 1975, to say the least :)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collin_Walcott

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glen_Moore

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_McCandless

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ralph_Towner

Warmly, Scotty

Found these awhile back too - :)

Am assuming too you received my email to you and Larry and friends this morning as well.

Hearing 'Oregon' is a bit of a holiday for me :)

Love, Scott

Hey Tym,
Just found ...

"In August 1972 and August 1982, OCF hosted concerts headlined by the Grateful Dead. Known as "Field Trips" ...." (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oregon_Country_Fair) OCF is Oregon Country Fair ... :) ... it's great that Wikipedia got these GD gigs at the OCF down ....

Now how best to head to Oregon in the 1970s re a kind of Oregon vision ... in a realistic virtual earth ? ... but probably not in a realistic virtual Harbin since this would be in virtual California :) ... and in a great realistic virtual earth for history ...

I've never been to Breitenbush Hot Springs in the Oregon Cascades ... would be great to soak in its pools in a realistic virtual earth in the 1970s even ... and from home bath tub :) (which is what I'm seeking to create with my actual-virtual physical digital Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic project :)

Love, Scotty

Have you ever visited Breitenbush Hot Springs in Oregon? Am liking the photos I'm seeing here in Street View, but I haven't been there yet actually -  https://www.google.com/maps/place/Breitenbush+Hot+Springs+Retreat+and+Conference+Center/@44.7814124,-121.9758287,15z/data=!4m8!3m7!1s0x0:0xe74d6736a2e2b854!5m2!4m1!1i2!8m2!3d44.7814124!4d-121.9758287 (first time I've seen such good photos of the place, and gotten a good sense of it, having looked before online :)

So then I looked up Alpha Farm Deadwood Oregon, which Susan and I visited together (and which I explore numerous times in my blog), and found this in Street View - https://www.google.com/maps/place/Alpha+Farm+Co-Op+Inc/@44.160437,-123.70174,15z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x15294d5749a4f92b!8m2!3d44.160437!4d-123.70174 - with not such great photos yet ... can't get a sense of the place with these ... :)

(Have blogged some about Ursula K. Le Guin ... and speak of envisioners, who lived in Portland, Oregon, for much of her later life ... a documentary film about her by Arwen Curry will be showing at the main Berkeley Public Library for a 2nd time on October 26th ... ... which information just came through in email ... have you already seen this?)
Just going on a bit about Oregon :) (There are many other sides re 'realism' in Oregon that don't gibe here :)

Warmly, Scott

Here's 'Oregon' "Our First Record" from 1970 ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_8Zj9l-Ijo&list=PL5AF2F529982BD3E6 ... where they seem to lay down an 'urlar' (classical bagpiping's Piobaireachd word for ground or theme - https://www.piobaireachd.co.uk/what-is-piobaireachd) ... that might inform some of the rest of Oregon's musical journeying since '70, ... into recordings as well ...

Am continuing to work on my first Scottish Small Pipes' album for 2020 ... and am learning from Oregon in these regards as well ... https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/bagpiping ...

Hi Ma,

Nice again to talk last night. Thanks for sharing ...

Appreciating Angela & Victor's teaching style which is playful, emotionally freeing and deeply personal ... may seek to explore this further

Interview with Angela Farmer & Victor Van Kooten https://t.co/fU3fhjl5bS Based on the island of Lesvos in Greece, #AngelaandVictorsYoga have been teaching together since they met more than 25 years ago. Their teaching style is playful, emotionally freeing and deeply personal  :)
