Non-theist Friends, NtFs  -

Brilliant stuff (as they might say in Edinburgh, where I studied as a high school student at Fettes College, and attended chapel every morning, and 'Collection" or prayers every evening as well:):

Here's Cosmic Sceptic Atheist Alex at Oxford: "DISGUSTING Things From My Theology Degree" -

https://youtu.be/VvcOfUrHS5U ... seems very relevant to Quakers / Friends and now NtF/ Nontheist Friends' emergence historically too somehow ...

(Am a religion major from Reed College, and I find myself listening to the Grateful Dead - https://archive.org/details/gd1971-04-28.126262.sbd.boswell.smith.flac16/gd1971-04-28s1t04.flac -  as I listen to Alex, concurrently, a kind of remix :)

May also head over from Religion to Philosophy or even NtF Philosophy. Am finding Eric Dodson's thinking fascinating in these regards; see his "Wisdom and Education" -

'Wisdom & Education' by Eric L Dodson

https://youtu.be/hBa7rGQXupU

Wallace Watson (Duquesne Professor Emeritus) or Rosemary Coffey - do you happen to know Eric Dodson by any chance? (Was he by any chance involved with Pittsburgh Friends' Meeting)? He lived in Pittsburgh PA and was a Duquesne University graduate student from about 1987-1996 (Have blogged a bit about Eric Dodson's philosophy and psychology here too - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/10/andean-cock-of-rock-wisdom-education-by.html) ... Very brilliant stuff too :)

May head up to Harbin Hot Springs / Heart Consciousness Church virtually too here -

... and re all of the above! :)

Friendly cheers, Scott

Hi Ma,

Just checked in with Barbara Salisbury re power outage, and am re-sending text message below ... How are you?

Hi Ma, Electrical power and internet are out in Canyon per a text from T-Mobile recently yesterday saying they were working with / cooperating with PG&E and SCE (and Contra Costa County government official too), then I just caught a glimpse of internet possibly working again, with power stll off. Caught a warm shower earlier with the passive solar water tank still warm from yesterday, had a soft-boiled egg because gas still works, but lit the stove with a lighter, but microwave oven doesn't work. Bagpiped a little with metronome on battery powered keyboard, learning that my piano's speakers were newly malfunctioning. Then reading Castells' brilliant 'Communication Power' (2nd ed.) I got new insights into how reading empowers / can be 'power' too - particularly the pages 103-105 on the way the internet developed without authority playing a role (I teach about this, but gained new knowledge). Also after sitting first thing, did big Yoga standing poses - good day for these, and beneficial too in many ways. Wifi on smartphone seems to have gone off again (10:35am PT) as I write this text.... so waiting for power - both electrical and internet to come on. Phone may still work, and may charge phone's battery driving in ~53mpg? car soon. Just a little bit of a power inventory on a Thursday morning in Canyon 94516, northern California. (Gets me thinking further about earthquake preparedness too re my kit for this. Probably will look further into getting more batteries). 'Power' too is still off for World Univ & Sch re no monies ...  seeking for this to change ... (and re work - possibly creating 2.2 million jobs in 200 countries & 7111 living languages) ...  maybe lack of power for WUaS will change with my recent ethics' writings :)  .. speaking truth to power to use a f/Friendly Quaker phrase? Culturally (sub-culture) too. Writing a way here :) ... Departed Canyon to charge phone in car, and am out at the 5 way intersection of Skyline Blvd, Shepherd's Canyon AND Manzanita  ...where internet is working

(((then a fire truck drove by with blazing lights, and a left blinker

and then a car did a screaming full circle with smoke coming from its tires, and someone - Asian I think - standing up through the sun roof in the car with smartphone video-ing the full circle, and propelled by the Gs into one corner of the sun-roof)))

Good to have heard from Byron MD that he can't come to my 19.10.19 party ...

" Hi Scott,

Thanks for the party invite.  We’ll be back east at that time.

Best wishes, and have fun!

Byron, Cindy"

My reply:

Hi Byron and Cindy,

We will miss you at the party!

Best wishes, and happy travels!

Best wishes, and happy travels, Svott

Byron's very smart, a MD, an old friend, a UCSF head of research, and he grew up in Piedmont in SF Bay Area, and he's a neighbor.

Hope I find a wonderful partner soon-ish, and as nice somehow as my house-let in Canyon.

But like Byron, I may be back east - to raise a family:)

Internet appears to be working away from Canyon, and car is charging phone. STANFORD law codex session online at 1:30.

Have a good week, Ma!

Love, Scott

All these institutions re power structure in northern California are fascinating sociologically re communications' power ...

Hi Ma,

Following up from the 5 way intersection at Skyline Blvd, Shepherd's Canyon and Manzanita (where lot's has happened before including d.t. and some kids doing about 5 fulll circles with screaming tires a year or two ago ... with me there ... am not clear what role GPS might play in all of this)

... and then a fire truck drove by with blazing lights, and a left blinker on ...

and then a car did a screaming full circle with smoke coming from its tires, and someone - Asian I think - standing up through the sun roof in the car with smartphone video-ing the full circle, and propelled by the Gs into one corner of the sun-roof)))

and with further big ideas ... :)

Love, Scott

Hi Ma,

Thanks for your email.

I texted my first email to Barbara in this thread earlier ... and she replied about 30 minutes ago ...

"No power outage here yet.  Possibly tonight though.  Resting my back after osteopathic treatment."

... and I replied ...

Sitting in Claremont public library and someone was reading front page of SF Chronicle across from me with big headlines, something like SF Bay Area STRUGGLING with power outage hmm. Get well soon, Barbara !  :)

And then the Mac Store in Berkeley called me out of the blue, about the same time my Safari browser was shut down, and a new little program popped up in my "Force Quit" dialog box which I have open to shut down Safari browser regularly because it's not working well these days, in not loading Twitter or Youtube after a spell (may be Apple up to its old conflictual tricks ...)

Will see what's up in Canyon ... may be a region by region outage ... partly to integrate the communications, electrical, internet, government interactions ... who knows ...

... while at the same time these ;'powers that be' navigating criminal behavior re even the sex trade too ... who knows? (Am hypothesizing here ... )

And may work on my book of poetry further here in the Berkeley Public Library in case the power and Internet are off in Canyon still

Love, Scott

PS
I have a head lamp in the car, just in case ... and a lighter to light the gas stove ... and hope the water will be warm in the morning again ...

Love, Scott

Explaining programming to a 6-year-old:

1. You have something you want to do.

2. You write code to do it.

3. The code doesn't work.

4. You fix the mistakes.

5. When the program works, you realize your idea was wrong.

6. You fix the idea.

"The wisdom hierarchy: From signals to artificial intelligence and beyond
A framework for moving from data to wisdom."

e.g.
Data: All the error logs from that system.

Information: An organized report about the error codes.

Knowledge: The ability to read a specific error report, understand it, and possibly fix the problem.

Wisdom: An understanding of how different and seemingly unrelated errors are actually connected symptoms of a larger, underlying problem.
