Thank you again for "The Overstory" so much! Am enjoying this book - http://www.richardpowers.net/the-overstory/ - by Richard Powers which you gave me - 8 or so main characters, some 'tree hugging' environmentalists & activists - reminding a bit of my being involved in the Cathedral Forest Nonviolent Action Group in Portland, Oregon, and on the MIddle Fork of the Santiam river in the Cascades too, in the first half of the 1980s, and of the hippy environmentalist alternative culture in the air re Reed as well, and re the Portland Quaker Meeting (Multnomah Monthly Meeting) at the time too. I hadn't heard about anything called 'the late twentieth-century Timber Wars of the Pacific Northwest and beyond' ... but which strikes me as possibly apt now, and I'll learn more as I read further. Thanks so much again, Ed,

Hi Ed, 

For some reason, and for the first time ever - and right in the middle of attending a Federal National Science Foundation office hours (regarding potential grant application) - Navin Dosh,i just earlier, had a box of lemons from tree put, by the gardener, by his Ganesh statue at the front of the house. Unfortunately, the gardener has occasionally been using RoundUp, or similar herbicide, I've noticed ... and this concerns me, safety and health wise. (And re "The Overstory' environmental activism too).

Am curious if moving back into 670A Ridgecrest Road, Canyon is an emerging possibility, and whether another reason would be for safety from insecticides around 1749 Arlington (along with that this 'safe house' isn't really safe either .. from the latent networks of violence among the intl illegal sex industry ... and in my ongoing calling for abolition of this too, for example). 

Thoughts, suggestions, questions, ideas? ... and do you have any insight as a retiring KP MD into what might be developing in Canyon, and regarding my moving back there (having written the Federal USPO form in renewing WUaS's PO Box in Canyon, that I am living in a safe house)? Thank you!

Hi Scott,

Back to reading email.  
Thanks for the Atlantic article about Overstory.  As for embracing its “ dark optimism about the fate of humanity,"  I haven't gotten thorough the dark part yet.  
I set it down on the coffee table one sleep-deprived night at 2 a.m. and haven't touched it since.  I went back to bed, to sleep, and found myself sobbing.  It woke Valerie up!  She was a little alarmed, but she is acquainted with my episodic grief about the "fate of humanity" and went back to sleep.  

Anyhow, I've had a run of 4 or 5 nights now of sleeping straight through the night.  Still, arranging a later starting time for our hike sounds wise.  Waterfalls & trees.

Sunday morning at 10:30 am at Good Earth in Fairfax possibly? (I recall coming back from Scotland in between age 16 & 17 I think and sobbing a lot - I think I was a bit like a fish out of water, culturally somehow, in Edinburgh at Fettes between my junior and senior years in high school studying in the 1st year 6th Form of A levels ... Talk more?).

(The review is too blunt, but it's another 'roadmap' into the book like The Atlantic's ...) Is there a review of Book Reviews' genre? Is there Scottish thinking in this one somehow too? Interesting to read that El Cerrito is mentioned in The Overstory, in this review too. Interesting to see too that Powers is a MacArthur foundation recipient ... Am enjoying the eco-activism ideas he shares in it as an excellent writer :)
