Hi David, Susan, Rob and All,

I'm writing to invite you to the "153rd Scottish Highland Gathering & Games" - http://www.thescottishgames.com/event.php - in Pleasanton, CA, in the SF Bay Area this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I realize this is a last minute invitation, but I thought you might be able to hop on a plane nevertheless :)

I thought you might be interested in knowing particularly about the open Piobaireachd, MSR and Hornpipe/Jig bagpiping competitions beginning mid-morning this Friday. This is some of the best live piping around the SF Bay Area, and one can simply go in and listen - and it's free.

Solo Events:

NOTE: ALL PIOBAIREACHD EVENTS HELD AT THE SAN RAMON- MARRIOTT HOTEL:
2600 Bishop Drive, San Ramon 94583

And here's further information about piping the Scottish Games themselves in Pleasanton, CA - http://www.thescottishgames.com/piping.php - which happen all day on Saturday and Sunday.

They're very colorful and interesting, and the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton is a nice venue. And there will be much Scottish Country Dancing as well.

See you at The Scottish Games in Pleasanton, perchance!

All this said, I'm writing to invite you also one of these years to the Scottish Country Dance Weekend at Asilomar - Monterey, California, which happens in late October. While I haven't been yet, if, by any chance, one among you might happen to wend your way out here to this merry time by the great Pacific ocean, I'd be happy to host, accompany, and provide you with transportation (but alas not in a Karmann Ghia).

Cheers, Scott

Hi Tammie and Tegan (and Brian and Ian:),

MacLeod tent at Scottish Highland Games in Lego robotics - and for scaling to robots doing set up and take down eventually? :) Brainstorming-wise, I have the 'floor plan' of this Bits-and-Bricks' Lego robotics in mind - https://youtu.be/kMdx3ozvUT4 ...

Blogging a bit further about all of this - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/08/juglans-regia-153rd-scottish-highland.html

Cheers, Scott

(Tammie Vawter, aka Mrs. MacLeod Pacific - heads / organizes Clan MacLeod tents at Scottish Highland Games in California and on the west coast - and is probably one of the best Clan MacLeod historians around because of her Clan MacLeod tent, having just gone to the MacLeod Parliament in Dunvegan on the Isle of Skye in Scotland).

Hi Byron and Cindy,

I only play Scottish small pipes with bellows these days (due to what I'm calling my 'eustachian tube dysfunction' in right ear) ... and there aren't any competitions yet at Pleasanton for SSP anyway ... so no, but maybe I / WUaS will figure out how to create SSP online competitions and at World Univ & Sch even - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Scottish_smallpipes_and_borderpipes ... (I did win a Piobaireachd bagpiping medal competing at the Pleasanton Games a few years ago :).

It would be nice to see you at the Piobaireachd, Cindy, on Friday, if you find your way over.

Scott

What does freedom or self-rule or sovereignty look like for Scots in Scotland in the 2020s - as an independent country? Besides possibly having first to get out of the United Kingdom, and then seek admittance into the European Union, and in further defining taxation and defense questions, as well as defining economic and financial questions, - what else? Scots have had their own legal system, as well as educational system for centuries. The SNP will play a role in navigating all these questions, I'd guess, as will Scottish democratic processes. And with information technology - and with regard to society and information technology questions? Scots did build their own parliamentary building in Edinburgh around the year 2000, so much deliberation about all of this will probably emerge in the Scottish Parliament as well.
