Stanford - Dev and "TECH BRIEFING | Tooling for Machine Learning"

November 7, 2018

Hi Jonathan, and Paul, (and Javier),

Greetings Paul. Jonathan introduced you to me as CTO and Assistant Dean at Stanford University/ Graduate School of Education - https://gse-it.stanford.edu/about/team - and I'm following up here on some of the things we've discussed.

Nice to talk and text with you, Jonathan. And thanks for your ideas and feedback about World University and School's web platform and machine learning in the Stanford "TECH BRIEFING | Tooling for Machine Learning: AWS Products, Open Source Tools, and DevOps Best Practices" - https://events.stanford.edu/events/811/81176/ - just now. Glad too we talked a bit about what World University and School's web site looks like.

Much food for thought on how to grow from web site based on - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/ - to a Machine Learning plan and platform in all ~200 countries' and their official languages, and in all 7,097 living languages - with the A) Google ecosystem, B) CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare in 5 languages, and C) Wikidata / Wikibase (re Wikipedia's ecosystem which we're in) in ~300 languages, among other I.T.

WUaS is seeking to begin accreditation with California's BPPE soon and then WASC senior (which also accredits Stanford and UC Berkeley), and WUaS is engaging CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare (a gold mine) thanks to the Creative Commons' 4 license  ... which allows for A) sharing, B) adaptation but C) non-commercially (per MIT OCW Ex Dir Cecilia d'Oliveira) - and these will have an impact on planning for WUaS machine learning as well.

So how best might we talk further about beginning to grow WUaS's two web sites (below, re books and bookstore and Press) ? And how would you suggest improving this - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/ - toward machine learning on the university side in multiple languages and with translation ... and these toward machine learning with machine translation on the Academic Press / Bookstore at WUaS - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/AcademicPress.html - with these two books re the WUaS bookstore - http://www.scottmacleod.com/ActualVirtualHarbinBook.html - http://www.scottmacleod.com/HaikuishPoetryBook.html - as examples (and with Amazon as a model).

Am currently seeking a faculty position at Stanford, as World University and School seeks to develop - and hire potentially 30 Stanford graduate students to teach sections in group video/Google Hangouts to 100-500 online undergraduate students using MIT OCW and with the MIT faculty in video. I think you'd be a really great manager of this project, and potentially in working with 2 Stanford graduate students (budgeted) when World Univ & Sch gets the National Science Foundation Grant.

Great to meet you and looking forward to further talking about how to go from an improved web site for 500 online undergraduates to a WUaS platform with machine learning in all 7097 living languages with wiki schools for open teaching and learning, and with an Academic Press at WUaS with machine learning. ... all a beginning ML plan.
World University seeks to become the Harvard / MIT / Stanford / Oxbridge of the Internet and by accrediting in all ~200 countries' main languages for free-to-students' Bachelor, Ph.D., Law, M.D. and I.B. high school degrees. Stanford would benefit later from some fraction of the $46,320 per year per student it costs for tuition to go to Stanford/Harvard/MIT/, reimbursed  to WUaS by countries' ministries of education around the world - due to the CC-4 MIT OCW licensing. And Alphabet would benefit from the WUaS Press / Corp's planned for-profit, general stock revenue streams - https://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2016/01/14-planned-wuas-revenue-streams.html - in all ~200 countries' official languages, and indeed in all 7,097 living languages.

Best, Scott

November 15, 2018

Hi Jonathan, and Paul, and Stephen!

Greetings!

Talking tomorrow Friday at 3:30 sounds great, Jonathan. Thanks so much! World University and School's 1) web site, and the beginnings of the 2) Academic Press (planned in all 7097 living languages with machine translation) and online bookstore and 3) actual books for sale need so much development (I agree). I think I began these, HTML-wise, in late 1990s!

Here's the current HTML & CSS tutorial I'm looking at - https://youtu.be/pm5OVxpul48 - to upgrade my knowledge of these, but think that planning for many and other A) languages with machine translation B) Tensorflow / machine learning, C) VOICE and D) our WUaS Miraheze Mediawiki / Wikidata/Wikibase (which WUaS is in), and E) matriculating students re accreditation with the state of California's BPPE soon-ish makes much sense.
In this very earliest phase would make it worth talking with you, Paul, and other IT professionals in the Stanford GSE? And in what ways might we best explore doing this, Paul - since you are CTO in the Stanford Graduate School of Education (and possibly re WUaS in Korean as well; you'll find the Korean MIT OCW here - https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/)?

And here are the beginnings of where WUaS may be heading with VOICE, but potentially building from the Google platform: "ANATOMY OF AN AI SYSTEM. It's a large map & long-form essay about Amazon's Echo, and the full stack of capital, labor, and natural resources used in AI" - https://twitter.com/katecrawford/status/1038125309252587521 (which I just retweeted here - https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch), as one kind of model.

World University and School is very A) Google-centric, B) CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare-centric in its 5 languages and C) Miraheze Mediawiki / Wikidata/Wikibase-centric in its 300 languages, as a FYI.

Looking forward to talking tomorrow, Jonathan. Thank you.

All the best, Scott

You mentioned Stephen Wong, and Wilson Wang, who's LinkedIn's I'm adding here, for future reference.
Greetings newly, Paul and Stephen.

Dear Larry, here below are the two recent emails I sent to Jonathan Lai (with same last name as Tony Lai, a fellow in Stanford Law, right next to the Stanford GSE building), Paul Kim, Stephen Wong, and Javier Heinz (whom I know best from the Stanford Graduate School of Education, as a lead administrator of Stanford CSET).

I think the initial long-needed development of these will be HTML 5-centric (which I was mentioning last night) ... and even here professional development has much merit, especially in planning for languages, and AI ...

Am hoping and thinking this will work out ...

Sincerely, Scott

Dear Larry,

Jonathan and I had a generative conversation yesterday, Friday, Nov 17.

He suggested professionalizing the WUaS web sites.

Google Sites seem best here - being within the Google platform.

I'm currently seeking to verify worlduniversityandschool.org in Google Sites with Gate.com (WUaS's host) ... but this can take up to 4 hours, I learned. I'll probably seek to verify the WUaS Academic Press book pages similarly - http://scottmacleod.com/ActualVirtualHarbinBook.html - but with the Godaddy.com host.

He also suggested keeping in mind 7" x 3" for smartphones, etc., when designing (and also possibly as a side bar in a realistic virtual earth like Street View!).

He suggested a payment mechanism or shopping cart like magenta.com or https://magento.com/ . Will ask him further about this. If T-Mobile is what he means, they are value oriented, which I appreciate, and an established ethical company.

He also suggested using a Bootstrap Theme Framework like - https://understrap.com/ - where Bootstrap is a popular HTML, CSS, and JS library. This would all be for the HTML development of World Univ & Sch. And this would involve downloading and installing https://wordpress.org/download/ to use Bootstrap.

We texted this morning, and he suggests meeting, perhaps in person, - so WUaS web site development is occurring.

Per my two emails, we also seem to be working with Stanford GSE's Paul Kim (for technology development) and Javier Heinz (eventually for graduate student instructors, I hope) - and Jonathan may be billing through them - but I'll email Jonathan without them for the foreseeable future. Jonathan says he seeks guidance personally in project management. I mentioned focusing on voice technologies in these regards. I also said we hope to get NSF funding for 30 graduate student instructors (potentially over 3 terms, I think).

Good news.

Sincerely, Scott

Hi Jonathan, Paul and Javier,

Jonathan and I had a generative conversation yesterday, Friday, Nov 17. Thank you, Jonathan! Am including Paul and Javier, Jonathan, because I think they might bring some further ideas to this, besides doing it myself (where you can see the results after 11 years, and where it makes much sense in tooling World Univ & Sch for machine learning, to develop it professionally).

Thanks, Jonathan, too for suggesting professionalizing the WUaS web sites, which makes much sense. For example:

Books from the Academic Press at WUaS in the bookstore, as examples - 3) http://scottmacleod.com/ActualVirtualHarbinBook.html & http://www.scottmacleod.com/HaikuishPoetryBook.html

So I've been trying to verify worlduniversityandschool.org in Google Sites - being within the Google platform is a distinct advantage - but this doesn't seem to be working. For over 3 hours now, every time I click verify worlduniversityandschool.org in Google Sites with Gate.com (WUaS's host) - and I've contacted Gate.com twice - I get this error message

" Verification failed for www.worlduniversityandschool.org using the DNS TXT record method (less than a minute ago). Your verification DNS TXT record was not found. You might need to wait a few minutes before Google sees your changes to the TXT records."

... so this isn't working at this point. I'll probably seek to verify the WUaS Academic Press book pages similarly - http://scottmacleod.com/ActualVirtualHarbinBook.html - but with the Godaddy.com host.

Also Filezilla and CyberDuck, which I've used successfully in the past, are no longer working either, and I'm not sure why - i.e. I can't upload files with them. So I haven't been able to upload this Google web site verification file, for example - https://support.google.com/sites/answer/9068867 .

Jonathan also suggested keeping in mind 7" x 3" for smartphones, tablets etc., when designing (and also possibly as a side bar in a realistic virtual earth in something like Google Street View!).

And Jonathan suggested too a payment mechanism or shopping cart for the bookstore and WUaS academic press planned in 7097 living languages like - magenta.com or https://magento.com/ - I think, if I understood correctly. (If T-Mobile's magenta is what you mean, Jonathan, I think they are value oriented, which I appreciate, and are also an established & ethical company, as I see this).

And thanks also for suggesting a Bootstrap Theme Framework like - https://understrap.com/ - where, for my own understanding,  Bootstrap is a popular HTML, CSS, and JS library. This would all be for the web page development side of World Univ & Sch. And this would involve downloading and installing https://wordpress.org/download/ to use Bootstrap. I've downloaded Wordpress, but don't know how a Bootstrap Theme Framework works, in any way.

I'm glad we texted this morning, and that you suggest meeting soon, Jonathan, perhaps in person, - so thank you so much for helping WUaS's web site develop and grow!

I hope to get World University and School's web site going soon, and re WUaS's National Science Foundation's pending grant to hire 30 graduate student instructors - WUaS is seeking to hire Stanford graduate students - (potentially over 3 terms, I think) - and for accreditation fees to California's BPPE and to WASC senior which also accredits Stanford.

Giving these snafus, Jonathan, would you be able to meet potentially early this week, possibly at Stanford, or possibly near Lafayette BART, or a location of your choosing?

Thank you, Jonathan, Paul and Javier!

Sincerely, Scott

*
Dear Larry,

Yesterday, I sent this email below to Stanford GSE's Jonathan Lai, Paul Kim and Javier Heinz, together, - but am still having trouble with verification between WUaS in Google Sites and worlduniversityandschool.org's host - which is Gate.com ...

Hoping to hear back from Jonathan tomorrow, and who knows, but maybe Stanford could even begin to host both this WUaS site, as well as scottmacleod.com for the two books for sale, listed there (and for a myriad of other authors selling through the WUaS bookstore ... a bit like Amazon)

I have the sense World Univ & Sch is coming to fruition. It looks like a coding team is emerging out of Stanford's graduate school of education, and that accreditation first with CA's BPPE will be possible online in upcoming months, esp. with better web site. Online students from UC Berkeley's admissions perchance, matriculating in autumn 2019.

Sincerely, Scott

Hi Jonathan (and All),

Have had some success with Google Sites in beginning to revamp World University and School's landing page - https://sites.google.com/view/worlduniversityandschool - as a starting point. Google Sites said that, upon publishing, I should be able to go www.worlduniversityandschool.org and get to this new site, but this hasn't worked yet however, .

Thank you for the generative conversation, Jonathan, which is leading to these new much needed WUaS web site developments!

As a heads' up, WUaS (which I think it's valuable for all of you to know) is comprised of two wings, an
A) World Univ & Sch, a non-profit 501 (c) 3, as of 2011, and
B) the WUaS Press / Corp, a for-profit general stock company, incorporating as a forked parallel second legal entity in  2017,  - both planned in all ~200 countries and in all 7097 living languages with machine learning and machine translation. Here again are the planned revenue streams for both wings - https://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2016/01/14-planned-wuas-revenue-streams.html .

It was in and after a Stanford Law CodeX presentation that WUaS was able to incorporate legally as a for-profit general stock company in California - (and the named CEO currently is Julian Dumitrascu in Romania) - with an AI chat bot, thanks to presenter, lawyer Tom Martin. As WUaS begins to develop both wings, WUaS would like to plan too for the blockchain ledger. And the Stanford Law school has a new academic blockchain journal. Jonathan, and All, do you happen to know Stanford Law CodeX Tony Lai (same last name as yours Jonathan!) - am introducing you here in this email - originally from Hong Kong and Oxford, I think. He's spearheading in part Blockchain endeavors at Stanford Law, and it might be good to talk all together with him about how to begin to build in the blockchain ledger re both of WUaS's wings - i.e. for textbook sales to matriculating WUaS students, if appropriate.
Within Google Sites, I'd like to begin to develop with this 4 column approach - https://www.harvard.edu/ - especially for WUaS's ~12 main areas:

1 Languages (in all ~8,000+ - each a Uni or Sch with WUaS Universal Translator: https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/WUaS_Universal_Translator)

2 Countries/Nation States with map (in all ~200+ countries, each a Uni or Sch in official/main languages)

3 You at WUaS & Admissions/Registering at WUaS for free, accrediting, best STEM-centric CC OCW, online Bach., Ph.D., Law, M.D. and I.B. degrees

4 Subjects (using SUBJECT TEMPLATE to create new subjects)

5 Courses & Schools

6 Music School at WUaS (planned for all instruments, and for all languages as wiki)

7 Library Resources (all museums in all languages in a realistic virtual earth - think Google Streetview with time slider)

8 Museums (all museums in all languages in a realistic virtual earth - think Google Streetview with time slider)

9Hardware Resource Possibilities

10 Educational Software

11 Foundation at WUaS

12 Research (best STEM CC OpenCourseWare-centric - in ~200 countries official languages, and in all 7097 living languages as wiki schools).

How best to begin the "backend" planning for applying / registering / matriculating students in all ~200 countries' official languages - and first with accreditation and via the state of California's Bureau of Private Postsecondary Education ... ie course catalog connected with matriculated students ... and all of this while tooling for machine learning.

Thank you !
Scott

Dear Larry,

Momentous development with World University and School's landing page - https://sites.google.com/view/worlduniversityandschool - as a starting point, in the Google platform, and in a completely new HTML web site system with machine learning potential.

Glad I called Stanford's Jonathan Lai on Friday at 3:30 per schedule and that we talked for 20 minutes. Am seeking now to wait to hear back from Jonathan and them.

Have you heard back from your publisher yet?

Sincerely, Scott

Dear Scott:
The link worked fine.  I think it is a good place to start from.  Let's skip all of the "front" and "back" end stuff.

I'm supposed to get a proof copy of the book next week.  Sincerely, Larry

*
Thanks for your email, Larry.

Hopefully we'll find database and machine learning people to help grow in many languages. I've only been able to develop the html side of things, with both the web pages, and the wiki pages ... and now the tools are getting better. I hope WuaS Miraheze MediaWiki can grow in html etc too - it's heading that way - and on the Google platform too.

Am looking forward to your book getting published.

I have a health insurance question when we talk next.

Thank you.
Sincerely, Scott

Hi Jonathan, Paul (and All,)

Thanks for your call this morning, and for reaching out, Jonathan, and see you tomorrow at 4. When I asked in text, just now, about meeting at Stanford instead of Paris Baguette in Millbrae, your "No" came through in triplicate or quadruplicate - am a little unclear what this means (e.g. it could be the texting technology) - so I'm emailing to confirm our meeting here. Since these aren't technology questions, am including Paul and friends, but they are project management questions. Since you'll be at Stanford tomorrow before coming to Millbrae, and I'm planning to be at Stanford too, before coming to Millbrae, might we just better meet at the Coffee House in Tressider, or similar?

(Am seeking a faculty position at Stanford too, Jonathan and Paul, and meeting at Stanford could make sense re growing World University and School's web site in these regards as well).

Looking forward to meeting. See you soon.

Cheers,
Scott

*
Hi Javier and Larry, and Jonathan,

Jonathan and I will be meeting in Millbrae tomorrow from 4-7:30, I'm glad to say, re developing World University and School's web site platform further - https://sites.google.com/view/worlduniversityandschool . Am just confirming your texts and our phone call in email here, Jonathan, to bring Stanford fully into this loop. World University and School's NSF grant will significantly go toward hiring Stanford graduate student instructors to teach online (as well as especially one for web content development, and one for web I.T. development - both project management questions too). Am seeking too to bring the budget side of this conversation into play here, Jonathan.

See you tomorrow at Paris Baguette in Millbrae at 4.

Best, Scott

Hi Jonathan, and All,

In preparation for tomorrow, and re

Developing WUaS Miraheze MediaWiki as HTML ...
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Developing_extensions - in World University and School ... I have read this is in the works for probably more than a year now, but don't know more than this at present.

So one question I have for tomorrow, when we meet, is A) how to develop each of these WUaS wiki subject pages - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Subjects - in an HTML editor,  and B) especially as a SUBJECT TEMPLATE in Miraheze Mediawiki re this SUBJECT TEMPLATE - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/SUBJECT_TEMPLATE (so turning this into a template accessing 300 languages eventually) - so that its sections (in each of ~300 languages) can interoperate with WIKIDATA / WIKIBASE - https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Wikibase - in 300 languages (MediaWiki and Wikidata/Wikibase are Wikipedia technologies too. FYI, WUaS donated ourselves to Wikidata in 2015 for co-development, and got Miraheze Mediawiki as a new wiki in 2017 as a consequence). I'd also like to learn how to work with the sidebar in Miraheze Mediawiki, perhaps with this specific page as an example - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Wikidata_databases_and_ecosystems - but with all ~725 WUaS wiki pages.

WUaS seeks to become the Harvard / Stanford / MIT / Oxbridge of the Internet in all ~200 countries' official languages for the degrees I've mentioned before, and wiki schools for open teaching and learning in all ~7097 living languages. MediaWiki with Wikidata / Wikibase in ~300 languages is a start. Eventually WUaS students will be able to add to all of these in this manner - https://twitter.com/Wikimedia/status/1062417367261741057

Thanks, and see you tomorrow at 4 in Millbrae (which I just noticed looks like it's close to the SFO airport).

Looking forward to meeting tomorrow, and cheers,  Scott

Hi Jonathan, and all,

To what degree could we get the WUaS college application process started today - and possibly for applications by January 1st, like many other great Universities do?

See you at Paris Baguette in Millbrae at 4, Jonathan.

Scott
