I regret that I won't be able to attend this conversation face-to-face, but am wondering too about the idea of refraction in philosophy in some of these regards.

And might some useful 'mental energy' distinctions regarding mental agency be made between,

Brain and Cognitive Sciences

Psychology

Psychoanalysis & MD psychiatry

and Philosophy

And further might these be explored anew in a #RealisticVirtualEarthForBrainScience, and see this #Hashtag here -

Friendly greetings, (abolition-ally), and All the best,
Scott

[CamPhilEvents] Mental Sciences Club - 10th Feb

What is Mental Effort?

Following a series of discussion on "mental effort", it has become clear to us that there is no satisfactory or agreed idea of what it actually means. This is a problem because the term is widely used within cognitive neuroscience and often invoked to fill in the explanatory gaps when discussing the results of functional neuroimaging studies, particularly those identifying alterations in patient groups. We would like to examine the idea of mental effort more critically and carefully. We will do so at the neurobiological, the cognitive and the clinical levels and attempt to identify common themes and areas where further clarity is needed. We believe that a philosophical input to this area is much needed.

Dear Jessie and Tom, Cambridge Philosophy Events,

Greetings. Thanks so much for letting people far from Cambridge know about this upcoming series. I didn't listen to your talk, Tom, because I didn't know the Zoom or video conferencing link, if there was one. Sorry to have missed it. And I just searched on 'Tom McClelland (Philosophy) “Perceptual Harm and Perceptual Injustice” youtube' but didn't find a recording of it. If there is a recording, might it be possible to view it please?

And would it be possible please to join the upcoming talks via a video conference? Thank you, and greetings from the SF Bay Area, and CC-4 OCW.MIT.EDU-centric, wiki World University and School.

Dear Larry, Kim, Pin, David, Ed, All,

GREETINGS. Companies to learn from and potentially collaborate with? - and regarding their countries and languages:

A high tech light bulb from IKEA began to flicker recently. So I went to IKEA, and they may have discontinued carrying the lamp, and thus the light bulbs for it too. May have noticed a little disgruntlement among their employees, who were very diverse, too. May unclamp and bring in the 'lightweight' lamp itself with new replacement bulbs that didn't work newly, to return them, and see if I can get a bulb that works. How to grow Work World University and School and with people we hire who can thrive, and are excellent, in this ... And possibly as many as 2.3 million people? Could we begin this successfully via Google platforms and also practices?

Glad too Brendan Chan a Google Education lead has written that WUaS can send him 'asks' ... for the first time from Google ... And an indication that WUaS is collaborating more directly with Google than before:).

I continue to think about companies to learn from, or possibly collaborate with and IKEA is one of them, in a way, but then things come up like this experience, which leads me to seek to learn from, recognizing too that big companies are not that easy to change.

Google & Alphabet, IKEA, Toyota (for robots too in addition to -

Dear Larry, Kim, David, Sid, Ed, John, Alden, Peter,

Greetings further!

Re the email below, and companies to explore collaborating with, I'd also include:

Lego in Denmark - for WUaS Home Robotics and learning Scratch and Python (and especially because WUaS is an official carrier of Lego in the USA online, but not yet operationally) - and Kaiser Permanente with its headquarters in California, and even the SF Bay Area,  in 8 US states (and for online teaching hospitals, possible tele-robotic surgery and 7.9 billion avatar bot electronic medical records in 200 countries), and T-Mobile in Germany, Toyota in Japan, and Walmart with its headquarters in Alabama, and Ikea in Sweden ...

Regarding the last Twitter post in earlier email -
7.9 billion people for wiki free universal education /You_at_World_University & re https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Finding_/_creating_a_job_you_really_love & in 7139 living languages in ANY SUBJECT YOU CREATE https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Languages with CC-4 http://OCW.MIT.EDU & CC-3 http://OYC.YALE.EDU free degrees @WorldUnivAndSch ~
and disgruntled employees, am curious how to not only facilitate a wiki schools' conversation about - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Finding_/_creating_a_job_you_really_love - but also potentially with Google and at Work World University and School itself. Google seems to have focused on end user enjoyment more than most IT companies, and glad they're getting into education now, and collaborating more actively with WUaS.

I think Quaker schools for students can be very fun places to learn. And learning and teaching this too https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Finding_/_creating_a_job_you_really_love could be great. The wiki side of WUaS may be a place where people already WORKING as employees say at Quaker schools, or at a Toyota, or at a Stanford or MIT (on the potential University collaboration side of WUaS) might be able to teach remarkably well about an hour a week to such wikis in various languages. But I hope WUaS can elicit the thinking of multitudes of people wiki-wise, and even as we hire possible teachers to grow communities for individual wiki subjects, and in all languages.

Just attended the beginning of a Cambridge Philosophy presentation by a graduate student ... And am curious too how to ENLIVEN disciplines such as philosophy - something STANFORD has given some thought to successfully and emerging from the 1960s and '70s especially too. And if WUaS could hire such high achieving graduate students, and they could develop their teaching out of their long-established cultural practices of teaching and learning academic philosophy - and possibly on a WUaS Google platform, or on a WUaS platform, - how to help this come alive (am recalling a conversation about something like 'academic philosophy and like a grateful dead concert' at Stanford ... and I also think the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy does something unique and remarkable in these regards philosophically eg re - https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/artificial-intelligence/ ... "Artificial intelligence (AI) is the field devoted to building artificial animals (or at least artificial creatures that – in suitable contexts – appear to be animals) and, for many, artificial persons (or at least artificial creatures " ... and even regarding WUaS creating avatar bot philosophy teachers like Richard Rorty - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Richard%20Rorty - and Stanford professor at the close of his career).

Sincerely Scott

Dear Larry, Kim, David, Sid, Ed, John, Alden, Peter,

Added some further questions and companies here today -
Including Pfizer re a WUaS realistic virtual earth for genetics, and pharmaceuticals too, inspired by its Bartholomew Tortella MD - in a teaching video about how genes work ..

And found too his idea for how to handle MD burnout - 'Look within...' or look inside ...

HARVARD medicine

Rounds
What advice would you give to a physician who may be experiencing burnout?

'Bartholomew Tortella, MD ’80

Look within yourself to discern those things in medicine that, not so long ago, drew you to the profession, and put them back in your life. Give yourself permission to leave medicine if your inner spirit tells you that would contribute to helping people in a manner different from your current career.'

And also found 8 further most innovative pharmaceutical companies - and could we all pitch in to develop a virtual earth for pharma, drug trials, parenting etc - leaving it open for startups and even DIY genetic engineering revolution drug therapies emerging:)?

WUaS has barely begun to develop our STEM Research ON EITHER wing -
(https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Subjects) - let alone a single realistic earth for history STEM LABORATORIES AND everything.

Sincerely,
Scott
With Cambridge Univ philosophy ideas too

Jim,

Since you know so much about AI

Just found this AI article by 4 professors in Germany from Uni Stralsund which might interest you, perhaps for its distance from Silicon Valley where you are -

AI Google Translate?

Am not sure how I'd come into conversation with this and regarding OCW.mit.edu wiki World University and School, but could they help develop WUaS in Google Workspace for Education in German I ask myself?

Was also interested to find Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, where I studied through a Reed College program, be developing an online workspace, presumably with AI, and possibly with Google Workspace for Education and Translate etc.

and while NSF senior program admin Alexandra Medina-Borja said she could be a sounding board for WUaS seeking NSF GRANT Programs to apply for, having attended 2 face to face sessions at the NSF, none have emerged yet that I've seen as good fits for creating a realistic virtual earth for genetics, and particularly for using machine learning to predict human longevity genetically beyond 122 years of age (paper idea here - ScottMacLeod.com) - and I also don't know where ISSIP BROKERING AN arrangement could play a role here -

Hi Scott,
Thanks for staying in touch.

Alas, my German is very, very weak in spite of my surname's origins and some genes from the region, though I skimmed it and gleaned a bit.

My one take-away from the article is that yes, the world is getting closer and closer to your vision - the technological capabilities are getting closer and closer.

Someday people will all have 100 digital workers helping them get their work done. Perhaps by 2060.

Much sooner, by 2026-2028, people will be able to describe something they want to learn about, at what level, and in what language - and part of the WUaS vision will be realized.  I see it happening slowly but surely.  Perhaps for cooking recipes first.  Then mathematics.  Not sure how the progression of knowledge areas will unfold.  Recipes because they come from all cultures and languages.  Math because it is a formal, objective topic of broad interest in many cultures and languages - especially among young children and of course, their parents want their children to know math often.  Both recipes and mathematics are interesting topics.  Perhaps also, constellations and studying the stars.  Then home repairs and building things.  The progression of academic topics is harder to see, but math, sciences, computer science, programming, data science, are all hot topics.  Systems thinking and the social sciences, next perhaps.  Someone will figure out a way to make all this diversity understandable, and a way to see the progress - perhaps using history as the over-arching framework.  Being able to make the complex simple, so progress can be perceived is a great skill for a visionary such as yourself to explore developing.  It is hard, but may be worth thinking about how to accomplish.

No advice comes to mind on next steps though.... sorry.

Not very inspired today, just grinding along trying to finish my next co-authored book "Service in the AI Era: Science, Logic, and Architecture" perspectives.  Getting there slowly but surely.

Thanks,- JIm

Jim,

thanks too for staying in touch, and your instructive email with brainstorming ideas for example for possibly teaching the 4 German professors ways they might teach AI CREATIVELY -

Research at universities: artificial intelligence: potential and risks for our society
https://www.zeit.de/zett/angebote/2022/bildung/hs-stralsund-kuenstliche-intelligenz/index (and although I read this easily in German, I find Google Translate AI helpful in reading about 15 international newspapers in languages I don't know very helpful).

I found the video you shared of a teaching-learning conversation between adult and child about mathematics fascinating -
Computer Scientist Explains One Concept in 5 Levels of Difficulty | WIRED

I wondered how to help WUaS students with learning to code with AI with Avatar Bots - easily. How, for example, could they use a #FilmTo3D App (
https://twitter.com/scottmacleod/status/1481314054736015364) at the Google Street View with time slider level to convert this YouTube (Google) video into interactive interviews and captivating learning conversation or dialogue about abstract math? So I looked up 'create a Samsung neon aka artificial human' but it yielded results not open for learning. But maybe Samsung has open possibilities in coding with these 'Neons' since they would benefit. (Do you know any Samsung MIT Yale IBM Apple ISSIP folks who might be able to help?) So if WUaS could transpose this video into 3D, and regarding not only interactive learning dialog, but also regarding Packer and Jordan's key aspects of virtual reality - "interactivity, integration, hypermedia, immersion, and new forms of narrativity" (Packer and Jordan 2001, and see http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2016/03/birdwing-virtual-virtual-for-me-refers.htmlcould then WUaS students using the Scratch language they learned in "CS FIRST WITH GOOGLE AT WUAS" - https://csfirst.withgoogle.com/s/en/home - and the PYTHON languages they learned in 'WUaS Home Robotics' learning this 2nd programming language playing with the Lego Spike Prime Robotics' Kit - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/AcademicPress.html - adding some pure math and other computer Languages to build out realistic Avatar Bots and even regarding Avatar Bot Electronic Medical Records I wonder. Or could WUaS students with such a #FilmTo3D App even begin to create avatars WITHOUT knowing coding languages, such is possible in many virtual worlds, such as World of Warcraft, I think, and also in the more group-buildable ones such as SL and Open Simulator, and possibly MineCraft too?

Still seeking to connect naturally with a life partner, possibly who's a MD, potentially in her mid-20s, to begin a family (and if I begin to seek asylum in April on the east coast or in Europe due to the illegal sex industry internationally and its latent networks of violence - and potentially with the mentally ill former landlord in Canyon 94516 as one of the biggest risks - maybe I'll create a whole new set of options for meeting my life partner to be.

I have neither followed up with the NSF's senior program admin Alexandra Medina-Borja, nor found any good fits for a NSF program for WUaS to apply to for ...

Longevity Genetics' paper - Modeling (beyond Sequencing) human genomes for longevity beyond 122 years of age in a #RealisticVirtualEarthForGenetics for longevity genetics, using machine learning to predict programming cellular and molecular genetics past 80, 90, 100, 110, 120 years' old, and with other temporal genetic sequences (e.g. within a 1 year or 5 years' span) from smartphones, smartwatches, wearables, in Google Street View with time slider, Maps, Earth, TensorFlowAI, Translate, and with realistic avatar bots at the cellular and molecular levels too; Develop this for aging reversal genetics' engineering and research too.

http://scottmacleod.com/ ... but continue to seek suitable NSF programs for this, and then to develop this realistic virtual earth for longevity genetics into a realistic virtual earth for everything, including for students learning to coding realistic avatar bots' with AI, easily and in fun ways.

Appreciating your thinking about developing AI for personal recipes first, eg and "by 2026-2028, people will be able to describe something they want to learn about, at what level, and in what language" ... thanks very much. All of these would be interesting ways for students to learn to code avatar bots further, and regarding what they might to learn about too.

Thanks, and abolition-ally yours, Scott

PS
And see the #AvatarBotElectronicMedicalRecord in this blog post, as well as the AMAZING Tweet from George Church regarding digitizing a single molecule ... with so much potential for a realistic virtual earth for everything and #AvatarBotElectronicMedicalRecord for genetics ... and students learning how to code for these ...

Hi Scott,
Thanks for your note and sorry I do not have any good, helpful answers to your many good and interesting questions.

One thought to share back: Helping WUaS students learn to program can be done in many ways. Some may want to learn to get a job, some to complete a passion project of their own that requires coding skills, and others just out of curiosity to know what all the excitement is about.,,,,  probably lots of reasons.   I recommend Python as a first programming language because it is open source, with many libraries, lots of online tutorials, and good for getting jobs in data science and AI area.

Thanks, -Jim

Hi Jim,

Thanks, I searched on
'Could I get lego spike prime to learn python via play?' ... and found "Explore Python with LEGO® Education SPIKE™ Prime" -
https://education.lego.com/en-us/product-resources/spike-prime/downloads/python - and I enjoyed the Lego Robotics' Kit Tutorial for playing with Lego WeDo 2.0 robotics (but the Scratch language, which works with this too, wasn't even mentioned) ... So I am curious to explore the Lego Spike Robotics' Kit - which the WUaS Robotics' Store carries officially (but one still can't get this through the WUaS Educational Services' Store, so WUaS Corp wouldn't yet benefit for example) - to see if one can redefine learning as play ... and in this case the Python programming language ... then I'd have 2 Lego Robotics' kits for many more creative open ended HomeMade Robot building possibilities. (If I recall correctly, I got the Lego WeDo2.0 Robotics' kit directly from Lego, and not through any intermediaries, and could probably do this again ... and even to the benefit of the WUaS Educational Services' Books and Robotics' store:)

'CS First with Google at WUaS' course people may be developing a second course online like CS First (for learning Scratch) ... and possibly with a virtual component too in Google Street View ... in which case I might be able to contribute to this conversation ... if they are.

Thanks for the recommendation of a programming language to learn ...

Thanks, Scott

There are a number of Python with Scratch, and AI and machine learning, emerging resources here too -

PS
Glad MIT Sloan posted a picture of Ginny Rometty on Twitter -
https://twitter.com/MITSloan/status/1491040871181074432?s=20&t=7-jJW9yjwXgiBat8Oydl8A - perhaps as avatar bot too. Am curious whether she might happen to know fellow IBMer Ellin Barret in Canyon, and her brother, Neale, too, somehow. Both are from NY like Ginny, and Ellin's daughter went to Bard College in NY too. (Re living presently in a safe house too ... and possibly seeking asylum in April on the East Coast or in Europe).

PPS
I'm curious too if IBM might be interested in created a prototype for a multimedia room and even for a realistic virtual earth for genetics () and possibly in the shop at 670 Ridgecrest Road Canyon 94516 ... and with '4 MIT Media Lab' light bulbs in the four corners, or 4 Planetarium Projector light bulb camera on the sides? The WUaS Academic Medical Center proposed in Canyon (collaboration with Stanford Medicine, and Kaiser Permanente) has a number of proposed projects in such a new space here, with proposed academic papers and virtual earth projects here - scottmacleod.com ...

And here's one of the ideas:
How can we begin to get deep INSIDE the cells in a multimedia VR room with 8 Planetarium cameras in the corners and on sides of room, to be immersed inside the cell to begin to see some of this biological 'machinery' - and similarly how can we get in between the carbon bonds for example at the molecular level in hypothetical multimedia room:?)
https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2022/02/american-mink.html - and for longevity genetics' research and even aging reversal research (which I know you're skeptical about, but think nevertheless that a Physical-Digital approach will yield many further scientific breakthroughs).

Thanks!
