Ma, per Ed's & my conversation yesterday as we ate chips and garbanzo beans as balela - I recall (from Reed) that soaking beans overnight can lessen gas but didn't know that rinsing every three hours is helpful! ("Simply place dried beans in a container, cover them with water and let them soak. They'll need to soak eight to 12 hours, but the key to eliminating the gas is draining and rinsing every three hours. ... Gene therapies consist of genes (just as mAb Tx consists of antibodies, & protein Tx consist of proteins). Genes can be RNA or DNA (e.g. in viral delivery of Tx & can interconvert via RT & RNAP).

In this talk, Prof. Gooding-Williams explains Du Bois’s conception of beauty and lays out, in a preliminary way, his phenomenology of the experience of beauty.  Du Bois’s notion of beauty, he argues, is a conceptual distillation of his phenomenology.

Port a potty in the tsunami
 
I am the coastal lifeguard and tsunami scout 
on duty when the Tonga earthquake threatens the vast 
Pacific.  He is the tsunami denier, cheerfully cursing 
the cautious, ever-wrong bureaucrats who lock
the gate with warning: beach closed, tsunami threat.
We manage a mostly-cordial gab.  When we were kids 
that ocean chaos nightmare was called a tidal wave. 
I aver tidal wave sounds mild,
like a moon-cycle ellipse.  Tsunami’s rush 
of consonants, impossible in English, signals pernicious
as a tsetse fly, tyrannical as a tsar.  He opines 
transpacific politically correct, know-nothing
know-it-alls telling decent people what they can say,
can’t say, can’t enjoy a beautiful day on the beach. 
He harrumphs into the port-a-potty.  The rant echoes 
through the vents, anti-California, anti-expert palaver.
The flood threat is a stupid hoax, he gushes.  No waves
bigger than two feet, surge ha!  Just watch. 
His pants-around-ancles, full-tilt yammer crescendos
with “Socialist fascist nanny-state bureaucrats
cripple American independence” when the monster wave 
crests at the horizon.  I unbuckle surfboard from truck.  
He chatters from his tax-funded temporary palace,
that apex of molded plastic architecture.  Flimsier 
than a straw house, huffed and puffed by the biggest, 
baddest wolf.   I dive into the tumult, rescue
him in his bobbing capsule, his free speech zone, 
his bathysphere of doom. That’s what we do, us mindless sheep, 
minions of the Big Man, slaves of the state.
