A wonderful restorative Yoga class in the new Yoga Hall at 670 Ridgecrest Road (shop:) and then head up to the warm pools (that interestingly have many parallels with Harbin pool area!) in East Bay MUD afterward for a soak, part of the Warm Water Cure in the Academic Medical Center on the ridge (Stanford-KP-World University & School collaboration)?

Welcome back. Good thinking. There's a lot of history here, but after getting permission from Julie Adams ('MD', & kind of #2 in pecking order for 'decisions' after Ish, and who has been pecked a lot!) TO WRITE AND PUBLISH my 1st big Harbin book, and after a great interview with the founder, Ishvara, ~ and after Sunheart's passing too (in autumn 2020) ~ some folks at Harbin (maybe the first two) didn't want my "Naked Harbin Ethnography" book published, after all, ... so was glad that Deidre Davis, MD ("managing director' possibly sardonically construed) invited me up twice not too long ago. Getting an invite would be wise for me to do.

Bio:


Scott G.K. MacLeod is an American academic and Professor of Sociocultural Anthropology and Sociology at World University and School. He is currently also the publisher at the Academic Press at World University and School. MacLeod was born in 1960 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, at a time when his parents were living in Lexington, MA. His parents met and married in the Unitarian church of Cincinnati, Ohio. (His father was a MD, who also taught medical grand rounds as a quick knowledgeable diagnostician, and a professor of public health, and his mother became the director of social work in a large urban hospital, returning to university after her 2 children had grown up a bit). Scott grew up on the eastern seaboard of the U.S., attending Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh, PA, from which he received a diploma, and Reed College in Portland, Oregon, where he received a Bachelor's degree (1985) in Religion (and German). He then received a Master's Degree (2003) in sociocultural Anthropology (with a focus on information technologies) from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and he also recieved a Diploma of Research (2004) in Ethnology (with an examination of virtual 'place') from the University of Edinburgh.

Overseas' studies: MacLeod first studied in another country in 1972-1973 in Geneva, Switzerland, in middle school, at Ecolint (an I.B. school), for 6 months, when his family lived there (his father was studying the health systems of 3 other European countries on a Ford Foundation grant), and then in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1977-1978 at Fettes College in the 1st year 6th Form of A levels, between his junior and senor years of Shady Side Academy, then in Munich, Germany, in 1981-1982 for 13 months, at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, through a Reed College program (living in the home of a Quaker family in Garching for his last 2.5 months there), and then in Scotland, for another full year at the University of Edinburgh, in the School of Scottish and Celtic Studies in 2003-2004, for another full year there.

His research focuses on the information technology network society age, the world wide web cosmos, and actual-virtual Harbin Hot Springs, and see, for example, these "Doubleday's Hummingbird: 5 UC Berkeley Anthropology Tourism Studies' talks in recent years 2012-2020 ... " -

~ My anthropological research focuses on ethnography, the virtual, and information technologies, that is on 'socioculture' vis-à-vis the web, with a particular focus on counterculture (http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com - I blog daily), as well as on UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The detailed, explanatory potential of anthropology and sociology in relation to the study of the social life of information technology, and to ethnography vis-à-vis the internet, as well as to internet studies, provides a fascinating intersection of approaches / disciplines / methodologies, and is my starting place. I'm interested, in addition, in questions of anthropology vis-à-vis science and STEM.
