"Use Gene Editing to Make Better Babies" . . .

Main Points

For the Motion -

  • The use of gene editing allows for couples to have children when they might otherwise have that option unavailable for them. It also allows for less to be left to chance during the pregnancy.
  • Gene editing will allow for babies to be born with reduced or eliminated chances of inheriting and passing on genes linked to diseases. We have a moral imperative to use technology that will improve the quality of life.
  • It is only a matter of time before gene editing becomes a widespread technology, potentially used by competitors and rivals on the international stage. If we have the technology, we should use it to our advantage to remain competitive.

Against the Motion -

  • The use of gene editing to create "better" outcomes in children will inherently create social stratification based on any gene editing, likely reflecting existing socioeconomic status. Additionally, the term 'better' is arbitrary and potentially short-sighted and dangerous.
  • Currently, there exist reasonable alternatives to gene editing for every condition for which gene editing can be used.
  • The technology is still developing, and the long-term effects of any gene-editing could be potentially dangerous with consequences echoing throughout the gene environment.

Hi Ed, there's a debate this afternoon with HMS's George Church & 3 others at 2 PT on gene editing - "You can vote & comment.   For what diseases (present & future) is genetic medicine a good option, FDA approvable, and equitably accessible" - https://twitter.com/geochurch/status/1494080415895896066 with relevance @WorldUnivAndSch & #RealisticVirtualEarthForGenetics for molecular engineering (https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch/status/1494341090001883136) Any interest? I'm attending (go to an academic debate together? We haven't done this much :)

Will genetic engineering drugs be different, in an unique category, from say new antibiotics? I selected the 'undecided' option when registering - https://intelligencesquaredus.org/debates/use-gene-editing-make-better-babies - about this 'motion' "Use Gene Editing to Make Better Babies" ... you? You'd register with this link ...

Hi Ma,

Lots of contested views in this 'gene editing' debate I just heard ... Did you hear it ? ...  But fascinating and good to air the issues at a high level (germ line vs somatic, equitability, covert nation states' governments' experiments, eugenics' questions, with this MIT Tech Review cover being mentioned - "Marcy Darnovsky just called out MIT Technology Review for having a blue eye blonde baby on our designer babies cover from 2015."
https://twitter.com/antonioregalado/status/1494444483987058690, re-Tweeted by Stanford Law Prof and Bioethicist, Hank Greely etc.) ... appreciating George Church's gene editing thinking ... And the progressive debate (since all 5 were progressive) ... am still undecided about the motion ... Interesting to get into a formal contested ideas' space ... Which the west does well ...

I think they're going to keep debate open for 7 days ... To allow further voting ... Was impressed too with John Donvan the moderator ...

... Ed didn't attend gene editing debate, and is visiting his aunt instead  ... in Concord? he wrote ...

Genetic engineering revolution drug therapies emerging ... Which aren't just adding substances, but importantly editing genes, and adding and subtracting them too ... Whole new world of medicine ...for all 200 countries ...

Debate on gene editing ... Yields some engaged tweets from Stanford Law prof Hank Greely

In this debate, George Church just called mRNA vaccines gene therapy.  This is sufficient to be banned from further speech.

Interesting to see that George Church is saying mRNA vaccines are gene editing in a way ...

Am wondering how such a panel will inform Longevity Genetics' engineering thinking (and potentially re WUaS Longevity Genetics' Institute too)...

How's your day going?

Love, Scott

good example. if gene therapy refers to the ends (change in nuclear DNA), not the means, could we say radiation therapy qualifies?

Gene therapies consist of genes (just as mAb Tx consists of antibodies, & protein Tx consist of proteins). Genes can be RNA or DNA (e.g. in viral delivery of Tx & can interconvert via RT & RNAP).

Ma,

How are you?

Since C (H. MD) in Moraga suggested that I call the Moraga police in around September 2020 after illegal break INS with brown goo evidence on my floor one night ... which calling was wise re State of California law and law enforcement issues (but possibly a risk for Cindy and Byron at the time - due to the unbridled criminality in Canyon hypothetically) ... And C. went to Stanford as an undergrad and her younger daughter may still be in the Seattle area ....

Could C. (and B.) thinking-wise arrange for me to meet possibly a 20-something yo MD SEEKING a partner ... ?

Calling the police in Moraga may open a way to getting a house in Canyon and for a song possibly ... Which could lead too to an Academic Medical Center with Warm Water Cure up on the ridge in Canyon and East Bay MUD ... Cindy's originally from San Diego so is a native California as is Byron ... And the culture is different from the East Coast ... And which could be interesting to study Ethnographically at Harbin Hot Springs for centuries to come - with a WuAS Longevity Genetics'Institute and in the Canyon Pinehurst road creek & EB MUD watershed.

Am not sure if N.P. MD would be a good fit or if we would connect naturally ... but it might be interesting to meet (A.C, MD and emergency room medicine comes to mind here, and that Celtic Craig Cuttyhunk connection re Massachusetts too:)

Love, Scott
